alcohol and weightlifting

afaik it reduces the rate at which you can put on muscle for up to 24 hours (maybe partially because it gets processed before everything else, so you liver has to burn it off first before it can process proteins?). Don't know if it actually breaks it down.

so would regularly chewing gum with sugar alcohol be terrible to do if ur trying to put on muscle, or is that different than the kind that is bad for putting on muscle

what about a few tbsps of liquid protein from GNC 30 minutes before my nightly beer?

I have a feeling sugar alcohols are different than "ALCOHOL"

is it true alcohol BReAKS DOWN muscle!?
Alcohol decreases endogenous test levels.
But more importantly, it decreases protein synthesis.
So it would cut into your gains.
How much? Difficult to say. But probably it would not cut a lot if you drink one or two bears.
If you drink more than 2 bears daily, probably there would be a significant difference.
Most likely consuming protein before consuming alcohol wouldn't work.

what about like once every week or 2 weeks for a night

What about for a female?

Women do produce testosterone.
Protein synthesis effect would be the same in both sexes.

I saw BBC documentary that claimed INCEREASED test levels in women who drank! This does not nec. mean more growth due to other factors that alcohol inhibits.

im no expert but i believe that weed is beneficial for weightlifting due to two things.

1 - increased appetite
2 - increased ability to rest

bump for weed and lifting
I'm almost sure that weed lowers test and raises estrogen. I know that during my 3 year pothead phase I was the skinniest I've ever been- not ripped, just small. Of course I didn't lift either :p

It's probably like every other vice- a little's fine but it's very easy to go overboard.

just hit that shit holmes.

seriously though, sub, enjoy life a little bit. Obviously dont make a habit outta smokin dro, but if you wanna smoke a jay or you and your boys got some bong action going on, dont even hesitate.

Do what jesus would do and fuckin hit that shit, hard!

Another false claim states that marijuana lowers male testosterone levels. This claim is a scare tactic that is still widely used by the United States government. The hope is to scare boys/young men into believing that marijuana use would "turn" them into women. Low testosterone levels are associated with underdevelopment of the growing male body, a higher pitched voice, and slight breast enlargement. This theory has been challenged/refuted by several studies: Block, 1991; Mendelson et al., 1974; Coggins et al., 1976 (3). Significantly less information is available on the effects of cannabinoids on women. One study suggests that ovulation may be slightly disrupted due to marijuana consumption. Not one single case of impaired fertility has ever been recorded in humans of either gender due to marijuana (4).

(3) NEW STUDY FINDS POT DOESN'T LOWER TESTOSTERONE

A new study by Dr. Robert Block at the University of
Iowa disputes the commonly held notion that marijuana alters
the level of testosterone and other sex hormones.
The study contradicted a widely publicized 1974 study
by Dr. R.C. Kolodony, which reported decreased testosterone
levels in men who smoked marijuana chronically.
The U. of Iowa study found that chronic marijuana use
had no effect on testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle
stimulating hormone, prolactin and cortisol in men or women.
Noting that six other studies had failed to show
lowered testosterone levels in men, Dr. Block concluded: "It
appears that marijuana, even heavy use of the kind that's
typical in the United States, doesn't alter testosterone levels."
However, he cautioned that heavy use might have other
adverse effects, including "possible effects on reproductive
function and mild, selective cognitive impairments associated
with heavy, chronic use."
Block's study is published in Drug and Alcohol
Dependence, Vol. 28: 121-8 (1991).

The only adverse effects of cannabis with regard to bodybuilding (that come to mind) are:

1) Lung damage and carcinogens from smoke itself. If you like to toke use a vaporizer, which also uses a lot less weed in addition to saving your lungs.

and

2) MUNCHIES!!!! :chomp: Well, this can be good or bad. If you're bulking it'll help you choke down those 10 cans of tuna. If you're cutting, and you're like me, it's fucking torture to eat 2 tbsp of ANPB and then keep the lid shut.

and possibly

3) Plain ol' laziness. When you're baked, sinking into your la-z-boy, and watching The Simpsons, the last thing you want to do is lift or go for a run! :p

Pot is okay if, like anything else, usage is moderate and controlled. Haven't y'all seen the video clip or Arnold hittin the doobie? "Arnold is Numero Uno" LOL I LOVE THAT SHIT!

Good call kimchee.

I wasn't sure about the source of my info. I knew that the neg. affects of pot were overstated but I thought that it had stiill had some effect on test levels. Good stuff to know.

Much better, gotta love dope :p

well i can say from personal experience that smoking a lot of weed daily (1/8 to 1/4oz) will definately mess up your goals to get big. you can still get cut up pretty good, but i ate like a mofo and struggled to gain weight for 5 years. needless to say within months of quitting cold turkey i went up from a skinny little 112, to a healthier looking 125, still cut looking.
i smoked for years and used to think there was nothing wrong with it, but believe me, now im a little more mature and wish i never wouldve touched it... i can only imagine how big id be now. im up to 136/139 now and on my small frame it looks pretty good. if you only did it once in a while it might not hurt so bad, but it just depends on what goals you are after/your priorities in life.
ceasar989, im pretty sure Jesus didnt smoke
