It depends on the person, but a 17 year old can definetely grow as much, if not more than 20 year old.

im 17, and i was just wondering if a 17 year old can be expected to grow like a 20 yr old can. A trainer at my gym said otherwise, he said that because i am still growing and developing, i havn't developed the muscle maturity to really grow "out". That doesn't mean i wont get gains,,, just that i wont explode like someone who is fully grown. Is this true?

that really sux,,, because i thought that i wasnt getting any serious gins because of my age,, im beginning to get very depressed about working out. My training is good, i eat like a motherfucker, and i sleep 9 hours a night. Still,,, i see nothing. I dont kno how long this is supposed to take....

my training was (i just switched it this week) te conventional form of training a body part once a week. I have been working out for 4 months, i dont kno what kind of results i should be expecting after 4 months.

Do this. During the next week record how many sets, and how many reps you do, and what kidn of exercise. After that post it here and maybe people here can make your routine better. By the way 4 months is very small time period, many people need much more time

maybe im just expecting too much then, lol. Thats the problem, i dont kno what kind of timeframe i should be expecting to really attain a decent physique.

You probably are expecting too much. Obviously the interpretation of decent physique varies from person to person, but it takes few solid, consistent years of training and clean eating to lookl ike someone out of ordinary.

thanks a lot for all the help man, i really appreciate it. haha, i dont kno what i would do without this board! im going to bed for now,,,, night.....

I actually agree with the trainer to an extent. You are comparing apples to oranges to an extent...

It takes a long time for true muscle maturity...that is a BIG reason why I am looking thicker and leaner...my muscles are continuing to get more mature. I didn't begin to look thicker till about 24...then again I can tell a big difference betewen 24 last year and 25 (nearly 26) this year.

I also agree with the trainer. I am 15(almost 16) and have a friend who is 19/20. He started working out alittle later than me. But when he started we had the same bench. Now after a month(at most) his bench is like 60 pounds more than mine. Try changing your rountine to working each bodypart twice a week. I started doing that like a month ago and I am seeing much better strength and size gains.

Don't worry about shit like that. Never waste a workout day, eat a ton, and get as much sleep as possible. The gains will come.

You say you eat alot, but that is all relative. You need to post numbers. How many calories are you taking in every day? Some people feel full but havent eaten that much. look out.

i've been lifting for 4 years. i'm 15. i weigh about 240 (will be a fairly lean 225 in a couple months). i really don't look that much though. shoulders are thin and my arms are small-looking. of course it's probably jsut in my head

I grew faster when I was young then now at 22, BUT im stronger then I was, just not as big, but Im getting back there, hell I think I am there now, hmmm

tahts your problem, 4 months is nothing, come back in 4 years, if you havent grown then you have a real problem :D

in other words, have patience, give it time...

4 months is a long time! You should have seen SOME results. If you haven't put on inches in that timeframe (especially if you just started), change something, diet or routine.

Dont sweat it too much man..the gains will come in time.Sometimes you dont even notice that you are improving, but trust me..others will.If you are worried about size, you might take some pictures every once in a while,to compare(before and after).I dont feel like Ive gained much size since I started, but looking back on old pictures,I definitely have...the same goes for strength.
Listen to the people on this site, and keep training hard, and the gains will come.
Also...I second what B fold said about muscular maturity. When my dad was my age his entire stucture looked very thin.He doesnt work out at all,but now he looks alot thicker than he did back in the day. This probably changes with different people,I dont know...

Natural T levels are way higher for someone at 17 than 20, assuming your levels aren't below normal. You should grow as well, or better, than a 20year old just starting.

I am growing more now at 26 then I did when I trained for a couple years from 16-18years old. Although I attribute this to a much greater desire and that I am much more knowledgeable about training thanks to my studies and the Internet.

When I was younger I knew nothing, I just thought going and lifting weights would do everything, I had no plan and just lifted pretty much whole body workout using machines each weekday (for 45 minutes). I actually didn't look to bad and was in good shape as a result, who'd have thought.

I'm guessing that gains would come a lot slow for a 15 year old than for a 18 year old.. Am I right in guessing that..?

indian jelly i dissagree with that im 15 and have been liftin for a little under a year ( 10 months ) and i ahve seen some really great gains i was 110 lbs when i started last year in sept. Now in july i am 145 lbs with 6-7 % bf

But my own opinion is it all depends on your genetics with the way you will grow at our young ages!!

I think experience/knowledge has a lot to do with it.

Are you not gaining strength or just not growing in size?

When I first started lifting seriously, around age 15, I didn't accumulate the muscle mass I'm gaining now (at age 19), but I was getting stronger which was worth it.

Make sure you're doing good exercises that are hitting the areas you want to grow -- until I started lifting with a friend who read elitefitness (and turned me on to it), i was doing exercises that weren't really right for me (for example, I was doing DB flies instead of DB presses for chest growth).

Also, try to eat right. Good sources of protein are eggs (try to stay away from the yolk though, it's full of cholesterol), tuna, and milk.

Good luck man, don't give up!

Thanks for all the advice guys. Yeh, i have noticed some serious strength gains in the for months... for example:
Started beanching 100 lbs for reps... up to 135 (still pathetic lol)
Squats went from a pathetic 115 lbs to 205 just this week.
I am seeing results, but i dont think i look like someone who "works out". If i go to the beach or something, people dont say, "wow, he must work out" Thats all im really going for lol.
SwoolUG - i am eating as clean as i can. I allow one maybe two cheat days a week where i have something sugary or fatty or processed, but besides that its high protein, minimal carbs after 4 pm.

Gandiman, again, as gonelifting asked, how much do you actually eat. Would also like to know hight/weight. Most guys who can't seem to gain claim to eat alot, but they eat virtually nothing, and their foods are often lacking in nutrional value. To give you an idea of how much you have to eat. I've been dieting down for 11 weeks not (missed a week in the middle because I had to go on a trip for a week and couldn't get my diet right while away, so acutally 10). At the beginning, I was loosing 3 ibs a week on 3500 cals a day, one cheat day a week, and no clen or t3. I can eat 4500-5000 cals a day for a month straight an not gain or loose a single ibs. So, break down for us an average day of what you eat. If possible give fat, carb, protien and cals for each meal. You mentioned high protien, but didn't mention fat. Fat intake, in my opinion, is just as important, if not more so, than protien intake. Not that protien isn't important, its just that most guys who think they eat high protien probably get enough to grow, even if it isn't optimal. But a much smaller % get the fat they need for optimal growth. Here is what I'll be eating for a bulking phase starting in about 6 weeks (just an idea of an average day). I plan on gaining lbm w/o gaining fat.
3 ibs of steak or ground turkey (higher fat, not the lean stuff)
i jar of natural peanut butter (2600 cals per jar, maybe more than you are eating in a day)
3 salids, w/ romain, broccoli, diced pickles, shreaded cheese and olive oil.
2 protien shakes w/flax post workout.

i am 6'2", about 170 lbs. typical day is 4 eggs, 6 tbs peanut butter, 12 pd ground turkey, 8 oz cottage cheese, 6 oz tuna, 1 lb red meat, 2 protein shakes, 2100 mg fish oil

Increase the red meat to 2lbs and watch yourself grow. :) Keep everything else the same by the way.

without really knowing the rest of your routine and this is just a WIIIILD GUESS, If you almost doubled your squat but only adde 20 pounds to your bench, you may be overtraining.

You may not be neccessarily overtraing the chest but ALL the upper bodyparts together might be doing too much work cumulatively. That`s why your legs are growing in strength and not your chest. just a thought, look into it.

Is this all you eat all day? Why don't you try eating some carbs? I think this is definitely enough protein, but like others have said sometimes it takes huge amounts of raw cals to get things going, I used to eat in the 6-8000 range when I was like 185-190lbs.

Also, no matter how you improve you diet etc, it will take time to make a difference....

im 17 and im the same size or bigger then most people in my gym that are around 20-23. the thing is, my muscles still arent "mature" and my forearms are still small. im thinkin once i turn 19 my muscles will have a better look to em just from being used so much.

Lee, I'm 20 and my muscles don't have that "mature" hardness to them yet. You're lucky that you've started intelligent training and eating younger than me, so hopefully you get to that point quicker :)

muscles just get naturally stronger and take their shape over time. thats why young bodybuilders dont have that really ahrd look to them no matter how cut they get (with some exceptions).

the thing is, when i eat more carbs, i put on fat. not just a little fat, but definitely more fat than muscle. and sry guys, that was 1/2 lb of turkey, not 12 lbs. Could i be overtraining chest if i only hit is once a week? Routine was mon - arms, tue - legs, wed- off, thurs- back fri - chest. I dont see how that could be voertraining,,, im thinking if anything its undertraining. i do have naturally puffy nips,,,, could that mean my Test levels arent very elevated?
