adopting a dog from a shelter?

Anyone has any experience with this? We were looking at few Pit Bulls between the ages of 8 months - 2 years. Some people have not even called me back about the dogs I was interested in. If I go at one of the pets supply stores where they show them to people, would I be able to get a dog faster?

Is it worth adopting one? I just feel bad, I dont want them put to sleep. And I dont want a baby, I kinda want a dog thats already house trained. But I dont know how older dogs would accept children of 2 and 5

Tough call when children are involved. Personally I wouldn't go pit if its not a pup, you don't know how it was raised.

My friend has rescued his last two dogs and they've been amazing. I'll probably do that from here on out since I don't have time to train a puppy. Some rescues like the dobie rescue I've been looking at are pretty picky about who they let adopt. I was looking into adopting one a couple of months ago and they came to my house and told me I had to put a higher fence in before I could take one home.

Sorry, I would NOT trust a pit bull no matter what age or someone had to say about their disposition.

It's wonderful that you're trying to adopt a pet from the shelter though. Perhaps you can change your mind on the breed?

Good luck!

As Jnevin said, I dont have time to train a dog either, dealing with 2 kids at the same time. But what They look at is also how many hours would the dog be at the house on its own. And my answer to that is - none. I am a stay-at-home mom, so the dog would have attention 24/7

Puddles - a friend of ours told us the same, but I dont have the nerv to be teaching a pup :( and my husband doesnt want a lab, which would be fine with me

Here are the dogs I have been looking at:

My husband doesnt want a lab, cuz its too friendly to people....So I figured eithe r arottie, pit bull, bulldog or a dobbie.

Get a dobie. I've never had a better dog.

I would love to, but they didnt have any available for adoption. All they had is mixes of shepards, pit bulls, labs and some small rat dogs. I saw a beautifull rottie, but they dont know anything about her, so I wouldnt risk taking her home to my 2 kids

I'd so put up a fence and get 3 dogs, but with having to go out of town even a 24 hours every couple of weeks is too much.

Suxors worse that that fag ^^^

For what it's worth, we found our current dog on C/L.

Best dog I have ever had. Owners had to give him up, he was just under 1 year old. I'll never buy a dog again, too many out there in shelters/without homes.

Monopoly

Isnt it hard to decide which one to get? I just wanna ask the people if there is a lot of interest in a certain dog, cuz if there is, I would know that it would be taken care of. That way I can look for some that dont have a lot of peeps interested in it

what about a German Shephard?

They're smart, good looking, good watchdogs, and you dont have to worry about them going psycho like with pits

I had a few GS's growing up, and they were all great dogs

do not buy from a pet store. go to a breeder or the humane society

They had some mixes of them, none that really looked like a german sheppard . Otherwise, I would

why is everyone so against pits? They are generally very good with kids and people

Thats what I'm sayin - humane society, shelter.....they usually take the dogs to stores like PETCO, so people that wanna adopt would be able to see them. I wouldnt go to a breeder. There is a lot of doggies that need help :(
