Adjustable Dumbbells With Spin Lock Collars- Good??? Or Bad???

Guys, let me get your honest opinion. What do you think about Adjustable Dumbbells with spin lock collars? I know the standard spring lock collars suck BIG TIME!!! I handled the DB's with the spin locks at the sporting good the other day and they seemed pretty stable. Check them out here. http://newyorkbarbells.com/im-0030.html

There ok if one cant afford fixed dumbells. Personally I would go to a website that sells used equipment and get a couple pair of fixed " Commercial " dumbells, then purchase a set of platemates, 5 lbs that essentially are magnets that attatch to the end of the dumbell.

I hear ya punch...I used to have the adjustable db's and they were a bitch to train with! At least the one in the link is metal...mine were the really cheap plastic type and the threads got messed up and didn't fit quite right. Just a little too time consuming for my taste.

keep looking around
there are adjustable db that don't use the spin locks
i think there are always ads for that kind of stuff in IronMan magazine

D3track, the spin lock adjustable dumbbells are the most stable you can get without getting the hex dumbbells. The standard plates DO NOT move with the spin locks on them. The same can't be said about the spring locks.

yes, but after the 100's your kinda screwed. loading a 130lb dbl on spins is tough. By the way, havnt spoken with you in a while, how are things??/ Peace

I only use the dumbells for acessory moves. I use the barbell when I want to go heavy.

Things are good man, thank you. hit me up on AIM

I'm with Hammer. I rarely need DB's heavier than what I can easily put on spinlocks for ancillary moves.

Perhaps invest in hex DB's starting at 100lbs or over. Use the spin locks for weights below that.
Seems to be the most economical and safest solution.

Had a pair once when I worked out at home. Loved 'em.

If you dont need real heavy dumbbells I would give them a go.

I've got 25 pound standard plates and I've got no problem going 170 per dumbell. the challenge is raising the weight 2.5 pounds at a time after about 135 on the length I have.

I might just buy longer dumbells.

The only think I don't like is about collared dumbells is that the can be a little awkward to position for bench pressing.

I've put the 25's on my spin locks, too....and the only thing I don't like about it is the plates hit my arms when I do just about anything other than static holds.

I have a set of custom made longer DB's myself. See if you can find someone to make them for you. I think some for sale once, and they are OUTRAGEOUS in price. I got mine made for $60.:)

Here's a quick pic of them next to my spin lock:

I've used a standard 6' bar with spinlocks, & didn't like it much. Too much time screwing. And the collars came loose on any movement where the bar rotates. I was using rubber coated weights, so the collars locked in good, but if the weight rotated, it would pull the collar with it, and come loose.
DBs wouldn't have near as much screwing (shorter threaded area), but I don't know if they would have a propensity to come loose on curls, etc. Probably not an issue on presses and straight movements like that.
Just my experience.
I've gone to hex's from walmart at home. They're light ones, just for SLRs & curls. I think they stock up to 30s, so heavy ones are out of the question there.

I don't really care for my spin locks. They always get loose. I wish I had never bought them. But that's just me. But I rarely do any dumbbell exercises.

I am not knocking adjustable dumbells, rather I`m just sharing my own personal experience. I use strictly hex DB`s. I like the no farting around with adding / taking off plates and no positioning problem on my knees when setting up or dismounting when doing DB benches. (the ends are nice and flat). They will never come loose, rattle or roll away and they last forever. I paid about 42 cents per pound. Yes, a hefty INITIAL investment since I have 930 pounds of hex DB`s, plus the rack I bought to hold them. So thats 390 bucks for the DB`s and another maybe 100 bucks for the DB rack, with tax around 500 and change or so, but spread out over 5 / 10 plus years thats not much. IMHO they already paid for themselves in convience and saving time.
When I need 60`s..... I grab em, 80`s..... just grab em...
40`s..... there they are waiting, etc. etc. My 2 cents bro....

Yeah, I'm going to buy Hex Dumbbells when I get to 100lbs and above. I haven't touched a weight in over 2 years, so it'll be a while before I need them.:p I plan to use them quite alot on Incline DB Presses, Incline Flies, Shoulder Presses, Lateral & Bent Raises, Curls, Overhead Tricep Extensions, Lunges, Pullovers, and of course One Arm Rows(One of my favorites!!!). Is there anyway I can keep the weight more secure???

i have no experience with them, but if your like me......... and im looking to get a home gym

that may not be a bad idea.

when i buy my home gym i will get about about 600-700lbs worth of plates for a oly bar. so if you buy those dumbell handles, you can just use the same weight...... not a bad idea.

do you know how many 10lb plates that will hold???

Hey guys, I just found a distributor of Troy Barbells here in town. They sell Hex Dumbbells for 35 cents per pound!! This changes EVERYTHING!!! I might go all out and get the Hex DB's in 10lb increments all the way up to 100lbs for now. :D

I just left the distributor's showroom. The offer sounded too good to be true. So, I went there to follow up. The guy was cool as s**t! He said he sells his Dumbbells and Olympic Plates for 35 cents per pound NO MATTER WHAT SIZE!! He said the price is the same per pound if I wanted a 5lb Dumbbell or a 150lb Dumbbell. I think I found my new best friend.:p :p :p
