Adding PB to protein shakes slows absorption?

Lumberg

New member
Does adding PB or any type of oil to your protein shake slow absorption of the protein? If so, I would assume that you do NOT want to do this either for breakfast or post-workout because at these times you want that protein in your system ASAP.

Just wondering if there is real scientific evidence for this slowing of absorption phenomenon, or if it's just bodybuilding lore.

Just for the record, my post-workout diet is like this:

Immediately post-workout

1 heaping scoop whey
1 scoop glutamine peptides
1 banana
1 scoop dextrose

30-60 minutes post-workout
1 heaping scoop whey
1 tsp. PB
1 scoop dextrose

That way the second one is slower absorbing and you also create a second insuling spike once the protein from the first shake is already being digested. I also currently put PB in my morning shake because I am addicted to PB :drink2:

i always thought essential fatty acids increased the absorbtion of protein in the gut. thats why people are always adding flax oil to their shakes

saturated fats are supposed to slow absorbtion, but peanut butter has a lot of EFA's in it if i remember right

anyone else know for sure ?:)

Increase vs. speed up

Increasing absorption is always a good thing, but what does it do to the SPEED of absorption?

bumping for more info,

well, if you speed up the absorption, you can eat again soon and get more meals in, which equals more protien in ed

OK, OK, OK Fast absorption is good TO A POINT. I mean, who wants to eat 10+ times a day?

I am also wondering about the slow absorption thing for a pre-bedtime meal, you want that protein to digest over as long a period as possible (like 9 hours hopefully).

Tho I think I may have found out the secret to my nasty protein bombs--read the protein bombs thread for more info!

The pyloric valve that controls the rate food empties from your stomach is fat sensitive. Fatty acids tend to make it constrict and thus slow gastric emptying time.

Jacob, that's the first bit of new info I have heard on here in a LONG time. Are you a doctor or a medical student? Do you have a source for that info?

Ok, so the CW on protein is that you can only digest a certain amount of protein at a time (estimates vary from about 30 to 50 grams). So by adding fats to a dose of protein, do you think you could increase the amount of protein digestible at the time because gastric emptying slows, thereby giving your body more time to digest the protein? The protein in this case would be whey.

And also, to what extent can you slow the rate of gastric emptying? I mean, can you stretch it out significantly, like say with no fat your protein shake empties from your stomach in 1 hour. With enough fats could you extend that interval to 4 hours or more?

The slower something goes through your system, the better it is absorbed. This is the whole thing behind the whey vs. casein debate.

dextrose with Peanut Butter huh? spike the insuline so it can pull all that fat straight into your cells..............Thats one good way to get fat, way to go

Well as you know the insulin spike comes quicker than the whey and fat absorption--sugar is absorbed far more quickly than fat. So the dextrose in the second shake is really driving in the nutrients from the first shake. Then the contents of the second shake are slowly absorbed. At least that's the theory.
