Abs...Every day, or not?

This has got to be the most custom taylered body part in fitness or bodybuilding. Everyone has different theories on ab training. Some say every day is to much cause they wont recover, and others say calves and abs are faster healing muscles. So I'm just curious to hear what you guys find works best. And I know it's mostly diet. But when you've reach a low body fat percentage, whats the best way to enhance your abs.

I do abs 2x/week. On one day, crunches, and on the next day side bends (with weights).

bulldog-
ive seen your pics. what the hell are you worried about abs for? You have great abs.

I've tried several ways but what has worked for me best is training them 2-3X/wk. I hit all areas of the abs in one session (lower, upper, obliques) and let them recover for a few days. Each session took me about 20minutes. I did them first thing in my routine no matter what day it was.

I do them EOD, but not that intensly. My abs rarely get sore, however I do have a six pack. You should find what works best for you. :alien:

1-2 times a week has worked well for me. You have to think that they are like any other muscle group on your body.

I train mine intensely once a week. I use weight for all ab work I do...and heavy weight at that. I never go over 8 reps or 8 sets. I di two exercises, four sets each. The one mainstay is heavy cable crunches. The second exercise I change occasionally. Either knee tucks with a dumbell between my feet or a crunch with a plate behind my head. I hit them hard just like any other muscle. Abs are primaraly phasic muscles so they need heavy weight and low reps to hypertrophy. I'm sore for two days after my ab work.

You guys aren't going to believe this, but I only work abs once per month... my abs respond well. ONce per day is way too much. At the most, one light day and one heavy day per week... and this only while on a cycle. I'll post some pics on here one of these days... :)

Thanks for the complements on my abs Suspension. But the reason I was trying to get more ab info is because I train them every day and was wondering if that was nessesary.

Here is my pic. Feel free to critic my abs and tell me how I can make them better.

Your abs can not and will not develop if you keep working them every day. Same for any body part. You are overtraining the hell out of them.

hey what do u eat to get abs like that? is it ketp or high rpotein mod fat low carb/? and what type for how long do u do cardio for?? do u do HIIT or moderate jogging for longer periods..lolthanks

A strength training coach at a college I transfered from told me abs could be worked daily. Then again, this was for strength, not for looks. Our ab workouts tended to be shorter, but more intense than most body builders ab workouts I've seen. So there may or may not be a difference. Hope this helped.

By the way, the strength training coach was qualified. He had his Master's and many years of experience.

I would think you are overtraining as well.

Take a month and train them heavy 2-3 days a week, and I would go HEAVY...

See how that goes and let us know. I am interested to see if you can develop them further. I think you can by stopping ED as I stated above and incorporating heavy exercises.

twice a week at most. train them like u would any other bodypart, and once uve built up solid abs just maintain them with 1-2 workouts a week. thats what works best for me but hey, everyone is different

I refuse to do abs unless my bodyfat is like 6%. I haven't worked abs since they used to make us do 10 sit-ups every morning in P.E. class, and that's been 5 years ago. I have a 4 pack right now. Abs get enough assistancae work when you do squats deadlifts, rows, and presses. I have to agree with Stew on the fact that your abs won't improve if you work them all of the time. They need rest just like the rest of your muscles.

personaly i go once or twice per week, but as you can tell from the diverse replies to this post everyones are diffrant and what works for them is also diffrant.

try a diffrant routine than yours for a month and see what it dose, if you dont like it try a nother one, till you are satisfied.

Personally I do them 2 times a week as I feel once a week is not enough for me. Every day is way to much and they have no time to grow. Take a week or two off from training your abs to give them a break and then start hiting them hard every 3rd day or so

i do them 3x a week, but i have a ways to go before i can see em, diet and cardio wise... i do nonweighted on the middle day... prolly not totally neccesary but i have this whacked out theory about making my midsection bigger if i train them weighted... even tho i am fat as can be right now

When you guys say you need to let your abbs recover in order to grow, does that mean you want big blockey abbs? Will this not lead to a sticky out appearance even though you have a 6 pack? I train mine 5 times a week and I am really interested in your guys thoughts.

deffintly not, low volume high intensity with adequate recovery time is the best method to stimualte muscle growth, no matter what muscle it is.
after you build thick abs, it is just a matter of shedding your access bf
