Just ordered my Pilates roller to get the tightness out of my back. The Physio was riding my ass yesterday in an attempt to get the knots out of my back; LOL she was working up quite a sweat trying to loosen up my knots.
 
Pilates rollers are for dainty little ladies :). You want to get knots out on your own, got get youself a few lacross balls. Can use then along or tape two toegther side by side real tight, that setup works nice for rolling down along either side of your spine.

Thanks, I was considering some PVC pipe with a bit of cushioning. I'll have to see how the old lady roller works out; it says it's extra firm. LOL.
 
Update

The old lady roller is working out well. It's really quite firm (hard) with little nubs to help with traction. It really helps to pop my one hip (SI) back into place.

LAX balls, tennis balls, softballs, PVC, and medicine balls all very good for rolling out..as Zyg said you can take two balls (jeeze sounds shady) and tape them together like a peanut, and work your back out really nice.

I dont know WTF a pilates roller is, but most foam rollers are too soft and wear out too quickly for anyone who really gets after it....just looked it up seems its just the regular cheap foam rollers?

I like using this orange one with trigger point grids, and it has a PVC core so is much firmer:

That trigger point one, PVC pipe, and using med balls or other balls as noted above works great...

Another good tool is "The Stick" for self massage, really good for quads, hams, calves

Thanks Power! What can I say, Im an old duffer, been around for quite some time and always trying to expand my knowledge so I have a few golden eggs to share with the folks here.
