a wider bench press grip?

Foxxxy

New member
is it alright to have a wider bench press grip, i have to grab wider because the bar holder things, are right where im supposed to grab and i crush my fingers all the time.

i move the most weight with my pinky fingers on the rings. I have long arms and this grip feels good to my shoulders. Legal grip (Index finger on the rings) kills my shoulders.

If you are pinching your fingers move your grip in.

Some people have grips that range out of 'normal'. There's been champion benches with relatively close grips and wide grips as well.

Just take some time with an empty bar and, using good form, experiment until you find the right spot.

In practice it's often a good idea to use a variety of grips. Each one emphasizes something unique and will help you when you want to reach a new maximum.

is this one of those home crappy benches where the rack comes straight up from the 2 edges of the pad by your head?

i cant see reacking past the rack on a real bench that is freaking wide

no not really joe, its more like an inch away from my shoulder length... :(

put your hands straight out in front of you so they are directly in front of your shoulders. now move each hand out between 8 to 10 inches so that the total gap has increased 16 to 20 inches. thats about where your hands should be. if you cant do than on the bench without going past the rack then id say find another bench.

Yeah I realized recently that for the longest time I was practically doing close grip bench press. No wonder my max was stuck at 205 for a little while! I used to miss reps all the time too. The other day when I finally widened my grip I was doing the somolv jr 10 sets of 3 at 175lbs. Normally I would miss reps towards the end. This time with the wider grip I didn't miss one rep. It was great!
