I mentioned about this situation in somebody else' thread on the freezing weather, but this is getting ridiculous.
Problem: Nobody expected to have a hard freeze in Dallas this late or this suddenly, and somehow we failed to leave the furnace on at 55 degrees, as we normally do when leaving in the winter. My wife and I are in SoCal, and she just had a lithotripsy done Tuesday for an 18mm kidney stone, so her mother is ALSO here in SoCal with us. And her Dad is stuck in San Antonio with no flights back to DFW. Her brother also lives in Dallas (about 8 miles away), but has a steep driveway and can't get out in his car since Monday.
SO; we got worried about the house and the freeze, as it has no heat tape or anything to stop bursting of plumbing with the furnace off. So with nobody able to get over there, I called a friend of ours on the Dallas P.D. and he said that he and his partner would rush over there and shut off the main valve. Got a call from him later that night, that they couldn't break through the ice to get to the valve
. But the good news was, that the city water pipes had frozen off on Monday night, and therefore no water in the neighborhood. So I relaxed a little bit, thinking that we had bought some time. But now the ice is melting, and Kay's brother DID manage to get out yesterday and go up to the house. But he had THE WRONG KEY with him, and couldn't check!!! And the valve is still frozen anyway. So here it is Sunday, and the thaw is continuing, and I have no idea if there is water pouring all through that house, or if we got lucky.
This is just like one of those nightmares where you almost get to safety, but not quite.... We do have insurance on it, but that's beside the point. Exactly one year ago, I was busy re-drywalling the ceilings in part of the house after a hail storm made swiss cheese of the roof during a downpour. I guess at least we didn't re-carpet it yet from last disaster. The soonest I can get there is later this week, and if it did flood, it will mold in a few days.
So I'm going out now to get even with Mother Nature, and go for a motorcycle ride up the coast in Malibu, in 80-degree SoCal weather. I guess that'll get my mind off it!
