A Question For NY Firefighters

Ok i got canned from my job today. Someone called up anonymously and told them a whole bunch of shit. They looked at my application found discrepencies...

Anyways way before this happened I was considering going for the FireFighters Exam. And now that im out of a job I dont look forward to going back to Software Engineer , I cant stand being in an office its not for me....

So My question is, How do I become a firefighter. Where do I sign up for the test. What is the test al about? Will I have to wait a long time before I finally get accepted?

Im really serious about this. Im not just some schmuck whos having a bad day and wants to become a firefighter. I have thought about it for years.

I called the Firedepartment Headquarters and the gave me a number (718) 999-1475. I called up and they referred me to a newspaper called the chief , where they said I can get info about becoming a firefighter. but I dont see anything in there...

you will have to take the civil service test, and do well on it, to be put on a waiting list. the wait will usually be pretty long as it is very competitive, espically in LA, NY Chicago, etc.

you have have to get your career firefighting card, which is 240 hours in most states, and can usually be done at any community college in your area

you also need to be a paramedic/EMT, which can be done at most hospitals ask the dept on their policy about this, bc some depts will pay for you to go to paramedic school if they hire you, but most of them would obviously rather you already have it.

go to the dept and find out when the next test and study study study, i wouldnt recommend one of those "how to pass the fire fighting exam" books either

if you really want to be a firemedic, dont get discouraged, it could be years before you are hired, espically if you are older you may not be hired at all.

you should check into being a volunteer first, its a good way to get into the fire service and get connex, its only 36 hours in most states, which you leave you 204 hours for your career card

any more questions, just ask

oh ya if you've been convicted of any felonies or anything, or dont have a clean driving record ie DUI's, dont waste your time

Im turning 26 on Saturday and I had a DUI when I was 20.

I dont have any felonies but I am currently going to court for something..

Is that too old? And the DUI definately no?

i'm not positive about the DUI, i guess it depends on their hiring process, being it 6 years ago you might still have a chance, but they make it to be a big deal bc you will be driving the ladder/engine/ambulance

i would say 26 isnt too old, but theres gonna be alot of younger guys to go up against
