A Powerlifter's Diet

Tom Treutlein

Do powerlifters need more or less in way of nutrition than a bodybuilder? Just curious. What would their caloric intake look like, at 180 lbs? What kind of macronutrient ratios?

I don't see why it would be any different. Feed the body to perform at top level and recover from training.

Maybe less concern with muscle mass might make him eat differently.

Yes, well, how differently? Less protein or calories needed?

I also heard that 0.8-1.0 grams of protein per lb. of bodyweight is all that's needed for non-enhanced athletes.

They eat pretty much the same as BB's. Maybe a higher amount of carbs overall, but not that much different.

CCJ is right. Both he and B-Fold consume a lower amount of protein than what most would think "is needed". Both seem to grow and get stronger just fine.

I personally, try to take in more protein and fat, and keep my carbs moderate to low. Top many carbs just make me a fat bloated pig. (More so than I am already...:D ) I feel stronger and have more energy in the gym with high protein and moderate fat and carbs.

i think most everyones diet is different based on their genetics. whatever works for them, they do.

I don't know, I don't even get more than 100g of protein a day regularly and I have no problems here :)

serious bro?

i;ve dropped my protein intake down over the last few months and while my size took somewhat of a beating, my strength has been pretty good

if i dropped it more, i could save a whole bunch of money....anyone else have a low protein diet and gained well?

Protein levels fluctuate, I get an extra 60g or so on the days I train thanks to my whey drink before and after training.
But apart from that protein comes from meat and milk during the rest of the day. So it fluctuates a bit . So I guess I get 100-150grams a day on average

I used to take whey 3 times a day plus 2 extra servings on training day, so I got an extra 9o to 150 or grams a day. But I was getting fatter from that stuff, so I cut it way back. Now fat levels are fairly constant now, just need to reduce it now :)

didn't notice any ill effects from the protein cutback to tell you the truth, just less fat and money saved :D
Also makes me eat more real food too...

You might get better response on the diet board and the powerlifter board.

As for myself, I get 300g protein a day, 90% from whey along with 3000+ calories a day, but I'm just a scrawny hardgaining ectomorph who runs a lot, so YMMV.

Protein is overrated for gaining weight, eat some carbs

if you take a lot of protein, make sure your getting a lot of fat as well

also stop running :)

Different people have different diets, i know some powerlifters that eat whatever they want, your not out there to show how good your body looks, its how much you can lift.

Protein is overrated, yes its important, but nbody needs more than 1g per pund of BW....anything more than that is just hard to digest and not normal

Since when does "normal" apply to a weight trainer's life? "Normal" is exactly what we're trying to get away from. Anyway, you'll get lots of different opinions. I try to get at least 1.5 times my bodyweight in grams of protein.

i'll second that.

I was trying to put on some weight while keeping carbs moderate and it just wasen't happening.

After I upped my carbs (via more oatmeal and brown rice) I have started noticing more satisfying results.
