a pain in outer chest during supine bench

Training this semi pro football athlete and he seemed to have aggrivated his outside left pec. He was lifting around 455 and lowered the weight and yelled, i yanked the weight off of him and he said his left upper chest hurt. Later, he said he could still do lat raises and nothing hurt. I asked him to perform some exercises that involved the rotator cuff (NO< NO WEIGHTS or resistance), and he felt no pain. Is this a common injury to football players (fullback, linebacker) or just some stupid freak accident. I would like to know, he has final tryouts in may.

Sounds like he went too far during the eccentric portion. Everyone has a different end range for the BP. The bar does not have to touch the chest. You should test his end range and then have him stop the bar about 1 inch above the end point so not to aggrevate the area and injure the shoulder capsule.

Contrary to popular belief the bar does not need to touch the chest, there is a 15 degree carry over from your end point. So you cab get strength in the entire mujscle ROM without pushing to or past its end pont

Stretching the anterior shoulder capsule can lead to overstretching and permanent damage of the connective tissue resutling in anterior shoulder instability which can later lead to tendonitis, impingment, arthritits and capsulitis.

Glad I could help, sorry about the typos - late night.

A good way to prvent this from happening again is to take a bar pad, the kind used for squatting and put it on his bench bar. This will provide a natural stop preventing the bar from going too low.

Also you can have him do DB work on the floor, then the physioball and then progress back to the bench. Each stage prevents him from going too deep while gradually increasing ROM.

The DB's will provide x-tra work for his rotator cuff - wouldn't be bad idea to add in RC work and stretch his internal rotators .

Thanks supreme, he has been using a rolled up towel on his chest to prevent to low of a stretch. No physioball as of yet but rehab will be gradual.
