a new side lats exercise... effective ?

Hi all.

When I see something new I always ask all you first. I wish I had the picture of the exercise. Anyway, it says it is just as effective for side lats, but is a slightly different variation of the side lateral raise.

you are sitting using 15-20 lb. dumbells. arms are pinned to your sides, palms facing each other. with elbows bent lift out to sides until palms are facing floor and squeeze.

I always have had problems with my form doing reg. side laterals, but when I tried these, with my heaviest weight my form was much better.

So, is this variation of this exercise sound familiar ? If so, will it be just as effective as the standing lat. raise ?

Thanks !!!! :qt:

The way you explained it - it sounds exactly like "normal" side lateral raise.

The only difference is that you are sitting?

If that is it, I tend to think standing is better for overall strength. If you are standing you are calling ALL muscles into play - all your stabilizers, core muscles, etc. This is better for overall form and function.

Many people tend to cheat horribly on lateral delt raises when they stand. The seated ones are much more difficult and help you keep stricter form when training the medial head. This is more of an isolation exercise.

That makes sense jackedmom. I guess it is all a matter of what specifically you are trying to accomplish.

If it is more of an aisolation movement, then you should not expect to lift heavier. The focus would be more on slow and controlled isolated movement, not on how much you lift.

That said, I *personally* am more into overall body form and function - more bang for my buck and a better use of my time. :)
