when i start (try to) my truck it doesnt roll over, it slips... so i'm assuming the starter is shot... it went fast as fuck though, fine 2 days ago, slipped 2 times yesterday and is shot to hell now... anyway...

how much am i lookin at for a new starter (and installation) for a 96 chevy s-10...

I believe starters are not that expensive and should be pretty easy to install.

But I am not an authority on it so don't listen to me.

hey what exaclty do you mean by slips. if the starter is cranking and you can hear it spinning it is not the battery. it could be a bad starter solenoid not engaging the starter or the gear of the starter could be stripepd either way you need a new starter. those range from 100-200 dollars and 1-2 hours labor if you take to a shop. i am a gm mechanic so if you have anymore information maybe i can give you a better diagnosis. i like when they fall apart thats how i make my money:fro:

117k and this will be the first time i've had anything near the engine touched...

oh, and for the mechanic guy.... it's not the battery, i'm 100% sure of it.. i turn the key and step on the clutch and it will roll over for a splite second and then stop... when it stops it makes a sound as if someone is flooring an idle car.... it's the starter...

i'm wondering how i can save myself some cash... :) i bought a fucking house and move next week... nice fucking timing, especially considering i'm not getting my promotion/raise.

if you want to save money you can replace it yourself they are not very hard to do. which motor do you have some are harder than others. all you ahve to do is disconect th negative battery post then go under the car and take 2 wires off the starter solenoid and 2 bolts out of the starter and it comes out the reverse process to replace. just a side not take a look at teh possitive battery post while you are at the battery see if there is any liquid near it or white or green powder gms are notorious for corrosion on the positive battery post due to acid leaking. the only toold you will need are a 5/16 wrench to discconect the battery and a 13 or 15 millimeter socket and a ratchet to get the starter out and a 5/16 or 10mm to undo one of the starter wires and a 13mm for the other wire. those sizes should be right but i could be slightly off. jsut go to an auto store and get a reman starter they are not to bad like 100-200 bucks depending on vehicle i think the s 10 has a popular starter so it is cheaper. is the truck 2 or 4 wheel drive also. if you dont want to do yourself it will cost you 1-2 hours in labor so that can add up the dealership i work out is 84 dollars an hour so.... but you may be able to find a cheaper place. if you need any more info just ask.

nice info.... sounds easy but with the snow on the ground and my lack of knowledge on the subject it worries me a little.. i may slide under and take a look at it...

if i buy a new starter does teh cellenoid come with? my neighbor said it sounded like the starter was spinning but the cellanoid wasnt catching.... he races motor cycles so i trust him a bit...

by the way, it's the 2.2 liter 4 cyl.... you dont know of any sites on the net with step by steps, do you?

go to auto parts store and get a haines manual and take a look. It shopuldnt be too hard to change but make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable so you dont get shocked when you touch the thing.

I dont know much about starters but there might be a core return rebate if you bringback the old one. You can probably get one for about $60.00

it sounds simple as hell... a few wires and a couple of bolts.... how can that take more than an hour??? i'm wondering about the snow and freezing cold weather out there right now.... i'm gonna slide under the truck in a few and see if it looks as simple as it sounds.

yeah they are not to bad usually but like on a 4.3l v6 yoyu have to get to the wires though the wheel well and there is no room to manouver the starter to get it out but i beleive a 2.2 is not to bad. i dotn know any sites with step by step by i can give you the best direction to my knowledge. basically disconnect battery crawwl underneath, there will be 3 wires one big one going back to the battery dissconnect that it will be a 13mm usually. next disconnect the small wire it is a 5/16 or 10mm. you can do those in either order whatever is easiest for you. leve the third wire alone it is short and goes from the solenoid to the starter usually it si just a strap it stays where it is. then you will see 2 bolts at the front of the starter they will be 13mm or 15mm unscrew those. the starter should fall out. there may be a little shield there that you ahve to take off it will just be 1 or 2 little screws. then just pull back on the starter and it will come out of the hole. if there are any shims are anything inbetween the starter and blaock be sure to put them back. the get the new starter out and put it in the hole and put the 2 bolts back in and recconect the wires. sometiems taking the starter out first then dissconecting the wires is easier the only way to find out is trial an error but dotn let the starter hang by the wires this can damage them. thats the basic process. i cant think of much more that will cause you problems. it isnt to bad it takes roughly 30 minues being that you are outside and one the ground with hand tools. if i think of anything else or you have anything else to add just ask i wil check back later. oh yeah when you buy the starter they will have a core charge you will return the old starter and they will give you money for it. :fro:

go to a reputable starter shop...

tell them you want your starter rebuilt, you
want your core put back on your truck...

tell them you want ACDELCO parts, you
dont want any cheap shit...

you want a new ACDELCO bendix, solonoid
and heavy duty solonoid(sp) spring and brushes
and bearings...

if they wont do that, go elsewhere...

if you aren't mechanical, dont fuck with it...

you will wind up stranded or burn your truck up...

420 later... i have a car that starts... oh, and one that needs brake pads, rotors, and shocks.... uh, ya.... good times.
