James Niggemayer, the police officer who risked his own life, and shot Nathan Gale, preventing further deaths.

Guy went blazing into a club after hearing shots, with no backup -- run right up to a gunman shooting everyone, and took him down within seconds. Hence, saving many more lives.

Props to a cop who puts his own life on the line w/o a moment's hesitation (he went in 15 seconds after getting the call) and took down a murderer.

Wish there was a number to call and thank him.

he most likely violated this poor guy's rights, forgot to read them and served him a cruel and injustified punishment....lol

I wonder how a UK cop would have stopped with no firearms on him ?

'Hero' Cop Killed Club Shooter

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The cop who shot and killed a gunman on a rampage in a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub Wednesday night was being hailed on Thursday as a hero.

"We were fortunate that we had an officer that was very close that more than likely prevented numerous deaths inside," Sgt. Brent Mull of the Columbus Police Department (search) said of Officer James D. Niggemeyer.

"I think the community has a hero here."

Niggemeyer, 31, was patrolling only a couple of blocks away from the Alrosa Villa club Wednesday night when he got the call about a shooting at the heavy metal concert.

He got there in just two minutes and entered alone through a door at the back of the facility.

The gunman, 25-year-old Nathan Gale, had already shot and killed four people — including guitarist Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott (search) — and had a hostage in a headlock when the cop approached him.

Somehow, Niggemeyer — a five-year veteran of the force — managed to shoot and kill Gale without injuring the hostage.

"The officer was able to strategically gun this guy down before he was able to kill his hostage," Mull told reporters. "It appeared that he was about to kill this hostage when the officer basically put an end to it.

"Again, I can't say enough [about] his abilities, his skills."

Normal protocol has officers going into a dangerous situation like the one at the club only with backup from other police. But Niggemeyer didn't hesitate to brave it alone.

"The officer ran in without any backup, from what I'm being told at this time, and obviously put himself at risk with everybody else," Mull said. "If the officer wasn't as close as he was, I think this would have been a lot worse. It was a chaotic scene, just a horrific scene."

OK

I just got curious when I saw it was linked from aftonbladet.se

Didnt the police in the Columbine incident wait over 3hrs before entering the school? Think how many lives could have been saved if this one cop had been there. Christ! That one teacher laid there bleeding out for 3hrs when he shouldve been saved.

Isn't it his job

yes, it was his job. the thing that's being pointed out here is that this cop didn't just think, he reacted instantly. most people do not do that. most people when presented with a situation like that would think "oh shit! what are my chances of getting shot if i rush in there? i need back up before going in." this cop did none of that. he got the call, he went in immediately, and he took care of business.

Exactly. No "setting up perimeters", "taking care of people coming out", "asking witnesses what's going on inside", "going to car to get shotgun", "hiding in the back and analyzing the situation", blah blah blah type procedures.

Went in, went right into the eye of the monster and took him out.

And one important detail...Officer took down suspect with ONE shot....
Bad boys bad boys
watcha gonnna do
watcha gonna do when they come for you...

A toast for our good cops!
