There are some killer premade pwo shakes on the market. N2's Muscle Replenisher and Big Blast come to mind.
Personally I consume a rather large amount of complex carbs in my preworkout meal then have high GI carbs, aminos/hydro whey during my workout with four caps of gear pre/post. Then I'll go home and eat some chicken and rice or taters.
This works very well for me. My recovery is great and doms is rarely an issue.
