Yesterday I mustered more strength than I have ever had to in my entire life. In fact, it was my biggest PR to date.
My girlfriend was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and yesterday she was at her lowest point ever. She was extremely suicidal and trying every way she could to justify leaving this world. On the other hand, I was trying my best to talk her through it.
I had to take her back to her house in the afternoon because I had classes. When I got home I was speaking to her and she was worse than I imagined or expected. I immediately drove over to her place, but she had chained the door and I couldn't get in. At this point I was obviously very worried, distraught, but also calm and confident everything would be okay. But it wasn't easy.
I sat outside her door for about an hour, messaging her periodically to make sure she was okay. Fortunately she kept messaging me back. Eventually, she let me in. Obviously, she was quite a mess. She hadn't tried anything and was just crying in bed.
I held her for a couple of hours. At first we said nothing, but then she started with the suicidal talk once more. Then I got through to her... Thank god... I reminded her that she was going to be my wife, we were going to move out together into our own place next year, make our own home, have kids and grow old together...
From there on she started to get much better and appeared to regain her will as much as could be expected. Bipolar is intense and the pain she is feeling is incredible, and seemingly comes from nowhere. She just wants to escape it. Fortunately, I managed to ward that off.
She is on a few different meds for bipolar and an infection she has at the moment, as well as having some sleeping tablets left over from a while ago. She actually told me that she wanted me to take all of them away from her and just give her daily doses. I know that if she really wanted to kill herself she would find a way, but this was the easiest, most accessible and obvious thing she could do. This gave me a lot of hope that she will be okay.
She knows how much I love her and today she thanked me for everything I did yesterday. We are going to get through this. Nothing else matters. This beats any 500 pound deadlift.
