700+lb. bench gone wrong

Your probably right about those spotters. I, for one though, wouldn't have any idea about how to go about spotting that much weight. Something I haven't considered before.

Hard to dissect exactly why he failed: he had good control after the handoff. Might be a bit off the wall, but it looked similar to something I've been known to do on my heavier lifts. Being left handed I sometimes overcompensate my right by making sure it's in exact position,as his is, causing a lapse in concentration. My left will sometimes flair out that way. Basically just overthinking the attempt.

Of course, having the barbell dropped on him afterwards didn't help things.

he got out of the groove of the shirt. bringing it down fast like he did it was like hitting a wall and instead of the weight going down, it went back towards his head

the spotters were fuckin sleeping. the guy closest to the camera waits till the bar is just about on the lifters face, and the far spotter just drops it on him.

Got it, thanks! Shows you how much I wear a shirt.

The guy just dumped it, was trying to float and fell outta the groove and it went....

I watched a guy with too much shirt actually LET go of the bar twice, I mean he just plumb let the shirt drag one of his arms off the bar and it dropped on his big ass.

What can ya do, it just sux!!!

*inserts obligatory remark about inflating records, percentages and bench shirt carryover and quotes idiotic reply suggesting using aluminum bats in baseball when there is so much proven use of AAS by CONGRESS*

Sorta like a homerun record standing for thirty something years and then finally being broken and broken again in just a couple years, as Alanis Morisette says... "Isn't it ironic?"

*obligatory disclaimer regarding history of baseball... I don't know when the record was set before McGuire or Bonds broke it but I bet it's not really apples to apples any longer" ;-)

The spotters looked capable of spotting that weight too.
I have to look again, but was the back spotter pretty far away? it looked like he had to run up to the bar. He should have been right there.

thats too bad.

It looks like he'd have escaped without any harm if the far spotter had held onto the bar. It also seems as though there was no intended back spotter and the extra guy simply rushed in to help.

Still, he walked away under his own steam. I hope he's ok.

I wonder how bad that bar messed him up....i dont see why spotting that would be that bad with 3 guys. or even 2 once on each side. At least long enough for the guy to slide out. Maybe im wrong.

I spotted a guy that was working with 455, after the 3 rd rep the bar slipped from his right hand and crashed into his chest, I grabbed the bar from over top of him and a couple of guys swooped in and helped me lift the bar back to the rack. I about shit myself, but the dude walked away unhurt. I cant even imagine what 700 would be like, and the scream that guy let out.
