What size heavy bag would you guys recommend. I'm not a competitive fighter. I just enjoy hitting a bag to get the hurt pumping...Beats the hell out of running. I usually hit a 70lbs but am thinking that I might get more of an arm workout with a 100...Any insight??? Thanks is advance.

When I was a teenager, I had a punching bag in the basement of our home. I would say that it was fairly light. I remember that sometime after using that bag forever, I had the opportunity to use a heavier bag. Man, what a difference!!!
Your workouts do get more intense as the bags get heavier, IMO. I got winded faster w/ the heavier bag, than I did with my own lighter bag.

i once saw a guy break his hand on a brand new 150 lb canvas bag LOL...better when they are broken in a bit :)

or use bag gloves.

you should always wear handwraps and bag gloves before working the heavy bag, too many little bones in your hands/wrists to break.

Handwraps can't be stressed enough.

I just recently found this out the hard way.

My freakin' wrists and hands have been aching for weeks from just a few bare-knuckle sessions. :redhot: I should damn well know better.

as heavy as possible, my bag is around 205lbs, the heavier the bag the more punching power you will develop

Not to mention the scraping and tearing off of skin from the knuckles

I went bare-knuckle in the beginning and tore a lot of skin off. I was young and dumb, so I thought it was cool.

Meh, knuckles will toughen up with a little bit of time. Small fractures to your hands and wrists will not heal. They will simply get worse. Always wear at least handwraps, and work the bag, don't let it work you. Get a book on boxing, or something, so you know how to use momentum, and footwork, its more important than you think.

Bas Ruetten actually advises differant wieghts for differant things. Bas said he liked a lighter bag actually for boxing.

I like to switch them up myself. Sometimes super heavy bags stifle form and follow through motion too much. And they can really take its toll on you with wrist and hand pain, even with wraps and gloves. When I used to use 150lb bag exclusively for a while, I actually started getting headaches which I think were caused by the force not expelling enough through the bag and being abosbed by my body more.
