23lbs on Deadlift

I introduced the deadlifts into my 5x5 routine and from the first week of deadlifts, although it felt great, i felt that I could lift weigh more. So the next week I added a further 23lbs and lifted with minimum strain. Was this a bad move on my behalf should I just take it easy and keep adding 5lbs on or go back to my original weight and start over again?

Adding too much weight too soon is a big mistake, especially on deads.

Start with whatever weight is really challenging, especially on that last set, but not so much that you're risking injury. Give your body time to adjust to them. They are extremely demanding and injury prone, especially for newbies.

I don't see any reason to. If you're doing deads with "minimum strain" as you say, then you're probably not using enough weight. Just don't go nuts adding it.

i think you should have enough weight where you strain hard enough on your last set on your last rep that you may fail or just barely got it. you never get that workout back or get a "do over".

it sounds like you need to add weight
