200lbs Dumbbells

Laser

New member
Recently at my gym they added to their collection of dumbells they brought in 140lbs to 220lbs. I have asked for years if they could add 12.5lbs, 17.5lbs, 22.5lbs & 27.5lbs to their inventory with no luck. I cant imagine over 3-4 guys in my gym that can even use these monsters and we do have a huge membership.

I was curious how many guys on this board think they could utilize 200lb dumbells?

I've never tried the 200's for anything other than farmers walk training and shrugs. I have seen a guy that works for Europa get them for 4 on flat, pretty damn impressive.

my gym has the 2.5 increments but DBs only go to 120 or so. There aren't any super strong guys there anyway.

Highest they go at my current gym is 120's, which suck. They're the rubber-coated kind, so they're so damn wide I can't balance them at the top of a lift over 100lbs. When I lifted at Gold's, I used the heaviest db's they had there, 150's, but only for my heaviest sets of flat bench while on cycle. Otherwise, I just used them for db rows and shrugs. I can't imagine needing 200's more than 20's and 30's, so many more people use the smaller weights... be cool to see someone hoist those monsters though :)

My gym only goes to 120 which I'm sure I can do, but I've never done more than the 110s for my working sets.

Gunter has used my gym for the past few years, but a guy by the name of Chris Cook seemed to show up about the same time as the new dumbbells. I'm not sure who he is but he definitley looks like he could give Gunter a run for the money

Shrugs for sure....my gym goes up to 160's...been wondering if there were many gyms with 200's...would love to try them. Functionally, 200lb. Db's would not be good for much else except farmers IMO. Have seen a couple guys hit flat bench with the 160's as well as single Db overhead extensions for triceps.

there is not need for anything past 130 if your natty
Hope your kidding, i use 130's for dumbell rows with good form.
and im all natural.
Im sure as hell not the strongest natural out there either, not by a long shot

That's nice, I wish we had those. I could use those for bench, those 120's are just not enough for me. ;)

Damn, pretty sure not one person in my gym could use those, much less lift those. Have to beable to dead them off the lower rack.

Right now I'm one of maybe 2-3% that uses anything heavier than a 60lb DB. In the 1% that can actually use the 90+ ones but not for reps yet but I'm closing in. I can't imagine using anything above 140 within the next 8-12 months.

Besides half the people that use anything greater than a 60 can't seem to lift them back up off the floor onto the rack. Even the trainers struggle moving the 100's.

I've been asking for DBs ranging from 17.5 to 47.5 as well as asking for 1.25lb plates.

That's because those guy's don't deadlift or squat probably which makes them weak in the lifts that require real strength.

I see it all the time, guy's that can DB bench 90's or more for reps, but when they have to put them back on the rack they do it 1 at a time and even then they struggle a little. The few I have seen pick both up and return them looked like they were doing a max deadlift attempt lmao. It's joke.

I can rep out wiht 140s(high as my gym goes) on incline, but I cant imagine ever touching 200s

All the trainers are pussies, that's why they cant lift shit. They ask me to do it. ;)

My gym has dumbells from 5lbs all the way up to 200lbs dumbells (it goes in 5lbs increments). These things are massive as hell, but I have never ever seen anyone use them before... and my gym is pretty hardcore mind you.

I had a long talk with my gym owner about those dumbells and he made a good point. That is, very very few people can use the dumbells from about 150lbs and up with GOOD form, juiced or not. From a business perspective those dumbells are impressive to look at, but not functional since 99% of people will never use them (he took over this gym many years ago mind you). He was also thinking about getting rid of them since it will only invite people to use them in showing off which may lead to injury. In all his days as a gym owner he has never ever seen anyone use 150lbs and up with GOOD form. There are only a handful of individuals in the world that can use 200lbs dumbells with good form. I agree with this because the most I've seen was a guy doing dumbells pullovers with 160lbs dumbells for a few reps. I spotted him lol.

My gym has dumbells up 160, never used them yet, maby someday :mix:

how about someone finding a video of some crazy mofo repping out 200lb dumbells curling or benching them??? hehehe :artist:

I remember in an old issue of the short lived Peak mag that there was a pic of pro Mike Morris using 225s for incline presses. There's always someone around that could use the dumbbells though you may go there when they do not.

the best ive ever seen was my partner doin 150's for 7-8 on incline. thats also the biggest dbs ive ever seen. everyone always looks at him in awe, it is pretty kool to see.

Doing dumbell rows off the bench Ive hit 150lbs for 33 reps. So Id love to get my hands on some 200lbs+ for back day to give me a challenge. Theyd also be useful for shrugs. I never really use dumbells for presses so Its not likely Id use 200's on those. I once rigged a 150lb dumbell so that it weighed 170lbs. Took me 15 minutes to make with my knee wraps. Fell apart after one rep. Im not very good at making things. I did the 160lbs dumbells for 17 reps a WHILE ago, so could definately hit alot more now with that weight. I only have access to 150's these days.

I gotta take a pic of these babies! I just made a pair of 285's! Cap barbell makes a pro db handle that will hold 10-10's per side...OR 7-20's! Voila...285 per db! They're pretty oh so pretty!

*I'm going to practice my farmers walk now!*

my school gym only goes to 100's. ive only seen 1, maybe 2 other people besides me be able to use them on flat with good form. and im 5-10, 175 so there are MUCH bigger people that head in there besides me. the thing that sucks is i am doing 4X8 easy and have no higher dbs to move up to.

Find a copy of Ronnie Coleman's "The Unbelievable" online. He uses the 200s on both flat and incline.

Awesome! Can you row with them too? I was going to get a pair of custom DB's. How much do they cost? Keep KILLING that shit!!

They're too tall to row with. I added up the cost of materials and i would have to sell them for around $155 a piece.

Nice. Out of my price range! Sounds perfect for farmers though. I believe I saw a dumbell handle online for around 20$. Not sure where though.

i would use them for db shrugs and eventually incline and flat db presses. Ive done 150lbs before on flat presses.

Awesome shit brother!! Never used the DB's too much for chest. I might throw them into my routine occasionally on my free-for-all chest day. Ever since I stabbed my hand with a butter knife, seperating two hamburger patties when I was 19, the scar tissue causes alot of pain in the hand and sometimes it gives out. KEEP KILLING THAT SHIT BROTHER!!

It would take a lot of adjustment for me too be able to handle dbs that big, if ever. Im just not willing to give up that much time away from bb bench, love it way too much. So, would i ever use them...i probably would try if they were at my gym, but since the vast majority dont, then i probably wont.

Know what you mean brother. Id have to do them steadily atleast once a week to really improve on them. When I tried dumbells years ago I could never get my chest sore with them. It always takes alot of abuse for me to get sore, and the barbell seems to do the job much better. Plus I just like the feel of a loaded barbell better. I can also get those extra or forced reps if I choose, without getting smacked with a dumbell when I reach failure. And lastly, it takes alot of energy just to lug those things around, and I could see myself getting a back injury just from that. Maybe not, but theres just too many reasons for me to stick with the barbell. I get my heavy dumbell fix on back day anyway. I might even throw in some heavy seated dumbell presses for shoulders every once in a while. Keep KILLING that shit!!

Beast, wanna mix it up...try 5 sets of standing db shoulder presses next delt day. My shoulders have been growing slow for a year now and about two weeks ago i threw these in. Holy shit! Having to walk through doors sideways now and my bench is creeping up again.

Awesome brother!! Might give those a try. The only thing that might be a problem is the pressure on the lower back. Ive had to work around the lower back injury lately to keep from repulling it. With a belt I might be able to do them. Probabally not to failure though. If I can press 100lb dumbells for 8-12 reps seated, what should I use standing? Im sure Id have to lighten them up a good deal. ThanX again brother!

I started with the 70's and had problems hitting 5x5 at first. I'm doing them on shoulder and leg day (just trying to confuse my body a little) and i got the 90's for 5x5 this morning. Didn't know about the back issue, might wanna stay clear of them for awhile because they do stress the hell out of the lumbar region.

Nice weight brother! Yes, I need to be careful with what I do now, with the back issue. I dont even do heavy barbell curls much at the moment anymore. Used to like to swing the heavy weights up. Ill have to work around it until it heals up. Ill probabally avoid them for a while. I feel the seated ones a good deal also. Keep KILLING that shit brother!!

Try using platemates - you can buy your own if you'd like.

Personally, I own a set of 8 220s and I use them for juggling.

my gym is hardcore they go to 180lbs. I got to 130lbs flat presses for 5. Used the 170lbs for 8 shrugs. I only saw about 3-4 guys actually use the 180's for flat benching.

my gym in alaska went to 120 which i used for shrugs, then i had to move onto barbell shoulder shrugs. i prefer dumbells for shrugs though.

I'm sure quite a few will attempt them, most will fail. 250's are beasts! The logs we use for farmers walks are 257 each and i can't imagine trying to bench with them. Insane!

cool..seems most are using the heavy db's for shrugs..which is fine but that really isnt impressive to me..

Ms bev if you got 6 guys in your gym that will use them for something other than shrugs..thats awesome ;)

never underestimate the crowd at Golds Gym-- these guys will use the 250s even if it means ripping their backs out..LOL

Back in college I lifted at a gym where the DB's only went to 55 lbs then there was a set of 80's......that was it. Spent 4 yrs training there so I never got into heavy DB work.

Oh man I am jealous!

I could use up to 160's for pullovers, I think. I've never gone over 130 for presses because I've never been able to find DBs over that! (not too sure I'd need 'em, tho)

i used them, but merely out of curiousity; wanted to see what all the hype was for. I prefer bbs over dbs. The 200lb dbs were too awkward to use on an incline but I could use them with ease on flat bench press. I performed 1x10. I didnt want to do more........like I said, I was just curious. I think that the thought of lifting something heavy scares most people from even attempting , ........but like arnold ''I have no fear''

I found my issue in my junkpile and tested my Christmas gift to myself- an HP all-in-one. Some nice editing software comes with the machine.

we have 2.5lb increments up to 40 lbs and then it goes by 5's all the way to 125 which sucks because I can do that on incline now.

They gym I used to belong to had dumbells up to 200lbs. The only time I ever saw anyone use the 200lbs's was to anchor bands for squating (they would cross a 195 and 200lb dumbell and have the strap chocked to both handles).

Personally I've only gone up to 115's for 5x5 incline dumbells. I never do flat dumbell work. I got up to the 95's for 5x5 with seated shoulder press.
