Indeed..
I had a cool fast 73 hand me down V8 Camaro LT when I turned 17 in 1979.
I was told that if I got just 1 speeding ticket, I was walking...

almost just like me,except mine was a '73 mach one,and it wasn't handed down..first car though was a '70 VW hatchback..wrecked it so then I drove the big ole '72 Olds custom cruiser wagon for awhile

IMO...a Yugo is alot more dangerous than a Vette.

Especially if you some how got it up to 80 MPH...

The issue IMO is that a teen does not yet have the driving skills
needed to master and control a Sports cars capabilities.

Yes, to you or me a Vette or Mustang is better because you can use its handling and power to avoid an accident or be in total control of it when going fast as it is designed to do...

I see tons of teen age girls driving way past the capabilities of the civic or sentra they are driving..

So yes, no matter what you do, some kids are going to drive past the capability of their skills or the car, be it designed to do this or not. All you can do is teach them defensive driving tactics and threaten the priveledge of driving if they do get ticketed..

Might be bad judgement on the parents buying him the Vetter, but the ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY is on the kid. I'm pretty sure he was testing the power of the vetter and lost control....

My first car was a Honda Civic CVCC 1986 and realize that a car is a dangerous 2000 something pound weapon if not used correctly.

I notice a lot of people saying the parents should buy their kids this car or that car-

hell, I was told if I wanted a car I had better get a job...

my kids will have a 1984 mercury grand maquee(sp) engine has alot of power but it isnt geared to go fast and if there is a accident they will have 8ft of car on either side of them for protection

I had a Corvette at 18. It has nothing to do with the car. It has to do with the schmuck behind the wheel.

I blame his father. He should have pulled out.

Sorry, but that moron would of killed himself on Schwinn.

I would commonly drive 80-100 on the highway at 17. I was just fuckin good. A lifetime of video games made me a god on the road. But now that car is dead, so I don't go that fast no mo'

First off I am kind of surprised at the damage to the semi...80 mph or 100. Especially since a corvette, is so low to the ground.

Anyway...either way, this is a tragedy, where I truely don't think the parents can be to blame. Although, considering most parents, they most likely are blaming themselves.

Secondly, whether the car is a corvette, or Nissan, or even a cycle...driving ability comes with practice and maturity. And kids going down the street at 30 mph in a station wagon can be just as scary. They are more easily distracted...especially now... Have you ever seen a new driver talking on a cell phone, changing the radio station and checking out their lip gloss in the rearview...SCARY!!

Truly I think if you want a kid to drive with a little more responsiblity, having them get a job and make payments for the car, probably isn't such a bad idea. They appreciate it more because they are paying for it.. It is not a privelidge to be taken for granted.

the bottom line is no matter how you look at it, you hand your kid a car like a vette, they are going to do stupid shit

i can think of at least 3 fatal accidents we've had recently that involved teens and vettes. not to mention what i've seen my dumbass friends do, but i've been fortunate

kids are easily influenced, they're going to try to do whats cool. if it was cool to fuck around in a yugo, theyd fuck around and kill themselves in a yugo, but its not. that is why you dont hand a teenager a vette for his first car

make him buy the fuckin thing himself, then at least they'll respect it a little more

I think parents skip out on really teaching their kids how to drive. Driving is more than knowing how to parrallel park and knowing who has the right of way. If you're kid is going to drive a high horse power beast, take em to a local autocross track and let them learn how to handle corners at varying speeds. Controlling a car at 80mph is not a big task, but if they are fresh out of the DMV they have no idea of the dangers and how to prevent them.
