11-Month-Old Swallows Meth
SPOKANE, WA, April 18 - The child was brought to the emergency room by his mother Thursday.
It did not take long for doctors to determine that the child had ingested a considerable amount of methamphetamine. As best as they could determine by the baby's urine sample, he had taken the drug about an hour or two before his mother brought him to the hospital.
Meth makers usually mix a variety of chemicals, which sometimes include household cleaning products, to make the drug.
Q6 spoke with a family practice doctor Thursday evening who said that the drug, which can be fatal, also can cause severe damage to the brain and the cardiovascular system.
The baby, now in the custody of Child Protective Services, is in satisfactory condition at a Spokane hospital.
Investigators have not yet determined how he managed to get hold of the drug, but say they are continuing their investigation.
So far this year, there have already been more than 50 meth busts in the city and county. That doesn't include sites where meth labs have been found dismantled or dumped.
