I have 3 labs...they are my hunting dogs. We have spent over ten years walking around all fall looking for grouse, pheasants and turkeys. The older two are almost 11 now. My black lab has tumors all over his body---the fatty kind. The yellow one is arthritic. My 8 year old chocolate lab has a infected hot spot! WTF. I just gave them all baths and was looking at them. I am hard on them in terms none of them are fat!!!! They have been very active dogs all my life but are totally slowing down. i am not sure the older two are going to be bale to go to field this fall and that depresses me because they love it and i love to be with them! Scares me about them dying....

sucks....:(

it's hard, I was soo sad when my Rott dies of tumors, and dont even want to think about the dane, pugs or french dying :( I almost lost the dane to bloat/gastric torsion, he fought the great fight and won, what are you feeding them bro?

I still think about the dog I had growing up, and I still miss her, even though she died almost 15 years ago. A good dog will live in your heart forever.
It's never easy losing a member of the family (and they are!)

im not so fond of SD anymore, it's like all corn and fillers, I like taste of the wild, same price for better protein and ingredients

You're right, Science Diet is shit but they hype it as being quality. NO food that has ANY type of gluten in it is any good (or various meat meals/by products as the first 5 ingredients or so, ideally you want no meals or byproducts at all).

You really want to get away from corn and wheat when a dog has hot spots, they're like 100% diet/allergy related.

Indeed, I stay away from corn, beat pulp, rice, all those cheap fillers, prefer oats and fish, there are very few "byproducts" in fish so fish meal im ok with, 15pd wild salmon food is $25, 17 pd of IAMS natural is $17... I do understand the downgrade/cheap temptation but seeing that u already pay nicely (SD is not cheap) you may wanna look into other foods....

The only problem is some animals just don't like fish, heck, I've even got cats that don't like fish :lmao: Granted, cats can be WAY finickier than dogs.

In general, rabbit and/or lamb and rice is like the absolute BEST for allergies.

Frankly, I've observed that when it comes to pets, you either pay up front with expensive food or down the road with big vet bills and heartache :whatever:

anything you can buy at the grocery store is pure garbage...and most of th stuff at animal supply stores is garbage

its tough watching your pets get older :(

I don't know the exact deal with Science Diet and vets but something is going on there, commission or something. Used to be the only place you could buy it was a vets office.

I can think of half a dozen pet foods that are better. You have to go to a specialty pet food store but they're getting common. Shit, go buy chicken carcasses and teach them to eat "real" food (it's called the BARF diet, bones and raw food) that's the best but it's time consuming and you DO have to teach the dogs to actually chew.

No worries bro, PM me for a good lab. ;)

It's because Science Diet makes prescription food specifically for things like diabetes, kidney failure, bladder stones, and arthritis. The vets I worked for didn't necessarily recommend it they but they would list it off as a high quality dog food.

I dont like to let my dogs eat "human food" it opens the possibility for them to take food from strangers.

Back before dogs were domesticated (and currently wild wolves) they had to hunt and kill their own food. Common to chase and catch a rabbit or some sort of fowl and eat that "human food".

that is absolutely correct, that is how they used to function, but not anymore and I dont want anyone to poison them or to throw em a stake to break in....

It's true. I know vets. They push science diet but never give it to the pets they own. They get a cut of the profit.

I always thought the best pet food company was Nutro. No by products. Real meat with several to choose from- chicken lamb venison and other meats. The grains are healthy. No junk fillers. Oats and such. Good stuff.

better look again at the preservative used in nutro, tough I'll agree its better than some of the junk out there
my ex husbands lab has seizures on it

I know of some schutzhund competitors that go with the BARF diet for their dogs. Its incredibly time consuming and has its own set of risks.

my problem with it is...dogs are a domesticated animal, they do not have the same digestive process as wolves, coyotes etc...their stomach enzymes simply aren't the same
never mind which, no one is feeding their dogs "gut bags" from wild game which is part of a wild diet and has its own digestive process

I dont know about here in the US but back in CR vets get like a 40% discount on the food so they profit quite a lot selling.... Nuttro is one of the best foods in regular pest stores.

My brother's friend has a Mastiff I think? Mas..tif yeah. Anyway, the thing is like 150 pounds and literally has the body of a lion. The think has 16" guns I swear haha, anyway he feeds him 6 pounds of raw chicken each day. That's gotta get expensive.

Now that I think about it that sounds like way too much food. Maybe he was bullshitting about the 6 pounds. Had to be, right?

i went on the taste of the wild website and the descriptions looked awesome, fuck yes
it really really is and I dont feel it's too pricey either compared to stuff like nutro, eukanuba, pro plan and science diet and it is WAY superior than those.... it's even made with purified water :o
