To be fair, I can see the preftige and first world-ness of, like, universal healthcare and everyone going to college and stuff... but having youngs subsidize olds who cost 100x more than them and manipulating every single 18yo into crushing, non-dischargable debt when they never belonged in college getting a degree in 19th century african-american basketweaving women's studies in the first place and would've made $80k/yr in a trade...

With student loans already surpassing credit card debt in the US, I wonder how big the bubble will get before it bursts...

No way. I'm a fiscal and political conservative and socially indifferent. I'd like to go full libertarian, but we can't make that jump while everyone is still paying for everyone else's shit.

It's all actually part of the same problem. Anytime the government steps into an issue (student loans, public education, mortgages, farm subsidies, health care, retirement) it's going to get screwed up.

I see the allure of government solving all these problems, but people don't recognize that fact that government is run by people who protect their own self-interests first. The political class has almost no checks and balances. In contrast, businesses get exposed to market forces every day with millions of customers factoring-in hundreds of dynamically-changing criteria (price, service, quality, selection). What drives a politician? Re-election and access to their slice of the pork pie.

So here are the two ways we can optimize the prevention of government waste and abuse:

1) Re-program the psyche of every human being who wants to enter government to set-aside their own self-interests and operate purely as an altruistic human being.

2) Make government smaller so there's less stuff to steal.
