Fitness in the gym but what about fitness on the streets?

Hello everyone (if anyone remembers me). I have something for you all:

Going to the gym works great, for a lot of people. What about the people in America who just don't bother? Who drive to work from their house way out in the suburbs to some destination far away, sit at their desk job, drive home, and then do some other sedentary activity and then go to bed?

Does anyone here support the concept of either walking or cycling to their job, to their friend's house, to a shop, etc? I think it's amazing how everyone used to stay fit 80 years ago when exercise was a requirement to get from A to B. Most people didn't own cars. People walked everywhere. Many jobs required manual labor. Nowadays some people find it a struggle to fit anything in their daily schedule, like a trip to the gym.

What do you think about the concept of using travelling as a way to exercise?

And also dont forget that McDonald's didn't exist back then. Its kind of sad that this is the first generation that won't live past their parents.. Obesity... Sigh.. If only everyone had a love for Bodybuilding.. but then it would not be fun anymore. Here's my fave quote.. you guys think its true?

"The more bodybuilding you do, the more you appreciate all bodybuilders, because what they do is hard. Bodybuilding takes more discipline than other sports because food doesn't play a major part in them. Basketball and football players can eat what they want; no one cares about how they look, as long as they can shoot or pass. In bodybuilding, looking like an anatomy chart is a requirement. We have to be in shape, and the sacrifices made to achieve that are beyond the capacities of 99% of the population."

I have to live walking distance from civilization. I walk a lot. To work, to the grocery store, to visit grandma, to the mall, to the corner store.
I grew up close to downtown though, so I am pretty used to walking everywhere.
I think it helps to keep people having a minimum level of fitness.
We are lucky here though, we have lots of walking and cycling paths, and the people use them a lot.
The Rideau Canal here in Ottawa is the perfect place to walk, blade, or cycle. No cars, 7.8 K long, and it's gorgeous. In the winter you can skate it too.
Also Gatineau Park is really close, and is great for hiking and biking.

I walked a ton when I was living beside the subway with no car. I moved and have a car cause frankly I had to get a car for my job and living downtown with a car in Toronto at building with no parking is the suck cause street parking sucks ass in this city.
