Anyone seen Avatar?

Wife thinks it looks geigh, but will see it with me anyway.

Who's seen it and what did you think?

Avatar financially was a flop. $70M nowhere what execs where hoping for. In comparison, Twilight made $140M in a weekend. Double what avatar made:

'Twilight: New Moon' mania rakes in $140 million opening weekend - From Inside the Box - Zap2it

'Twilight: New Moon's' gross of $140.7 million puts it at third all-time for an opening weekend. It pulled in $258.8 worldwide, according to studio estimates

Don't forget, avatar cost 5x what new moon cost. Don't expect an Avatar 2 :)

avatar was released on a really shitty weekend. week before christmas...seriously?
and the promotion for it wasn't not done right.

but to say don't expect an avatar 2 is retarded. you don't know how the film will do internationally or if box office sales might be steady as opposed to heavily sloped.

and i doubt the producers of the movie are using "new moon" as their basis for comparison. Especially since that POS movie built its brand through books and a really crappy movie before that. So no, that's a shitty comparison. lol. in business,it's about YOUR bottom line, not someone elses

seriously, GTFOH

lol @ flop.

Made $250 million worldwide in 1 weekend. A 3 hour movie...and the studios werent expecting more than $70-80 mil anyway. Titanic opened to a $28 million dollar weekend...but continued playing for 9 months.

All of Cameron's films have legs. Avatar will do perfectly fine.

Anyway, I saw it this weekend in 3d. Was pretty good, but not spectacular. Wife actually liked it more than I did. Worth the price of a ticket. Its a cliched story, but as Ebert always says, its not what a movie is about but how it is about it. Avatar gets the job done.

I'm with 75th. Saw it in 3D on Sunday. It lives up to the hype, special effects were awesome and in typical Cameron fashion he doesn't feature them as the focal point of the movie.

Predictable story-line but well done. Solid B.

Have not seen Avatar, but going today to see Invictus. My friends went to see it at IMAX they say it was great, I dont't believe it will do that great bit we will see.

I went to see if on Friday, and they told me Friday Saturday and Sunday were fullt booked in advance for Avatar wtf??

Do you know what profit is? It's all about benjamins yo. Even if it made as much money as twilight (i doubt) - twilight will still make 5x more profit cuz it cost way less.

End of the day: Do you want to be a avatar producer or a twilight producer? Which will allow you to buy your own island?

What does that have to do with Avacor being an alleged "flop?"

And lol @ talking about "profit" in Hollywood when technically on paper Forrest Gump is still listed as a flop.

If only the writers in Hollywood were half as creative as the accountants.

Silly Entertainnment Tonight brainwashed man!

Flop = (money invested - money returned) = profit / expectation.

go read the dailies if u want to be more educated. i'm not goign to explain basic movie finance to you if ur laughable view of movie profits is simply "Hey $70M! Everyone's driving ferraris and living in mansions now I bet!".

Whatever the reason - avatar will barely squeek out a profit if it even does. The days of studios making massive profits from big huge movies are over - it's the new moon's, hangovers, sex in the city and paranormal acitivies low-budget, high-return movies that are keeping the studios in business, paying peopels paychecks and allowing movies like avatar to be made in the first place.

and stop listening to what cnn says.

http://www.slate.com/id/2124078/

Once upon a time—before the TV and VCR—studios earned virtually all their profits from a single source: the theater's box office. Nowadays, in the new Hollywood, the world box office is a money loser: In 2004, the studios lost an estimated $2.22 billion on the $7.4 billion they took in from the box office.

Is this movie supposed to be based on the series Avatar? If so they fail.... earth benders are not blue weird creatures....

Hollywood's profits, demystified. - By Edward Jay Epstein - Slate Magazine

Jesus.

Avatar is officially the #1 December opening of all time. It did $250 million internationally over the weekend. This does NOT include territories like Japan (where it will make a shitload), China, and a large portion of Europe.

Assuming the budget (with marketing) was between the unofficial numbers of $300-400 million, no matter how you look at it both Fox and Cameron are sitting pretty right now.

Any movie that makes back 80% of it's total cost PLUS marketing in 1 weekend is not a flop.

I'm not arguing...just asking him to explain how Avatar is a "flop" in his mind.

I anticipate some comments about Obama, white men on Wall Street, and American Idol if an explanation ever arrives.

saw avatar last night......phenomenal. I'll probably see it again and will look forward to the DVD release which will probably have an extra hour or more of movie in it. That world was unreal, my only quip with the movie was the "unobtanium".....seriously? Otherwise, spectacular.

As for this queef between RG and 75th......I"m going to have to go with 75th, this movie is going to be in theatres for a long ass time. Twilight will not do anything around the globe because no other society is as full of angst ridden brain washed market pwned females that fantasize about a werewolf and a vampire fighting over them. Avatar they will all go to see though.

Saw it in 3D yesterday and it delivers on the hype. Avatar will clean house over the long haul, will stay in theaters a good while.

Red, "unobtanium" is an actual term scientists use for materials not discovered yet.

Although, they obviously discovered it in the movie, so I kinda see your point.

american idol is great for RUNNER UPS

So....do you recant and now simply argue it won't make people billions of dollars in profit?

Cause being a flop and not being as profitable as another movie are two different things.

So if u mortgage your $1M house, finance a movie, and it brings in $2,000 in profit - you call that success or a flop? (by your definition it's profitable!)

Most movies "flop". Clearly you've never been an actor who profit shares. :)

Flop seems an extreme term. You're not 2% bf, you're fat. Perhaps, "not a blockbuster" would be more appropriate.

And besides, it's premature to make conclusions on it's profitability since it's not had to opportunity to earn money on DVD sales. Also, is there gonna be any merch on this flick?

needs to be video game also.

There's already a video game out.

And razor, for the third time, people get fucked out of back end profit due to creative studio accounting. Literally everyone who's seen a movie knows this. That DOES NOT mean that others don't get ungodly rich off of even a marginally successful movie. Or even one that loses money (eg Uwe Boll).

Your mortgage analogy makes no sense.

Oh and I'm still waiting to hear how Avatar was a flop.

If next year's budget is dependant on a big profit from a $400M movie - and it doesn't materialize - then yes it's a flop.

Yes kids, there's layoffs and people worried about their jobs too in Hollywood. Most people in Hollywood work 2 months a year and are always looking for f/t jobs.

I have no idea why people think everyone here drives Ferraris and lives in mansions lol. Read that article I posted.

Here's a good article:
It's actually quite tough to get a movie into profit
The usual rule of thumb in Hollywood is that 75% of all studio movies lose money
What percentage of movies lose money overall? | Ask MetaFilter

This book explains everyting I said in FULL detail. Great read:
Edward Jay Epstein is here to tell us that when it comes to Hollywood these days, we've got it all wrong. Each week the box-office grosses rung up by the big new movies are published, and each week it is near universally assumed, reflexively and reverentially, that they represent not merely an accurate ranking of current films but also an accurate record of how much they are making for the studios that produced them.
These seemingly huge earnings are wildly misleading, as the cost of making, distributing and showing new movies almost always far exceeds what they earn in theaters.

What you still wanna learn more about reality and what cnn says? read this breakdown:
http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/column/index.cfm?columnID=8359
If a film does not at the very least recoup its production budget, it almost is certainly a disappointment to the studio releasing it.

Buy that book if anyone wants to learn more (most people on the internet just wanna argue and feel smart - few wanna learn unfortunately)

is it based on the series or is it a coincidence?

Coincidence. M Night Shaymalanamanayman is making an Avatar: Last Airbender movie now.

Gladiator, just wondering if that's the same amount of research you did on how the swine flu vaccine was a gubment conspiracy to kill us all.

Producers I can understand, they'd literally shit out a movie if they knew it'd sell. As for whomever was at the helm creating any given piece of entertainment, that would be completely fucked up if $$ was the ultimate motive. Sure, just like Titanic, the profit margin of Avatar is a fraction of Twilight's, but what movie do you want to be remembered for making? Some teenybopper geigh-fest that people will laugh at 10 years from now (actually most people already are) or a cinematic masterpiece that will stand the test of time, help serve as a study guide for future film techniques, always being one of the first movies preserved/remastered for new formats, etc.

Actually, all things considered, it's highly likely Titanic has "made" more than Twilight ever will at this point, because it's a solid movie. Over the course of the next decade Avatar will probably do the same. The difference is, Cameron will still be respected a decade from now, whereas Hardwicke and Weitz are already lol.

am I missing something? I understand the movie cost in the neighborhood of 400m, but how does a 250m opening weekend mean it's a flop? This is a movie that A) is going to get alot of word of mouth and B)People are going to see this 2-3 times.

I can already personally vouch that I will see this "at least" twice, and I never do that. The last movie I had to see twice was cloverfield and that's ONLY cause a broad dragged me. I will voluntarily see this movie at least once more if not twice. And when the DVD hits......this thing will make 1B easy when you take into account the worldwide sales. This is a series too by the way.....by the time Avatar 2 comes along everyone will know this brand.

from the reading i've been doing it appears that RG is the only person who considers this movie a flop.
But the majority of people also voted for bush, and look how well that is treating them.

Hey Bino,

1.) It's 2009, Bush isn't in office anymore.

2.) In 2000 the majority of people voted for Gore. Bush won through the electoral college loophole.

3.) In 2004 the majority voted for Bush because we were all ready to bomb the fuck out of the Middle East...guess that's the part you were talking about. ;)

Wasnt anywhere near that good, bor.

Inglourious Basterds remains the best film of the year, IMO.

I watched it in digital 3d....I loved it...it's got everything a good movie should have, a greta plot, good acting, adventure, visual effects, tech gadgets, freaky aliens, human / alien interaction, furious battle scenes, good fight scenes, inspirational speeches, etc....

Inglorious bastards was not that great IMO.

For me, the best movie this year was the Hangover PERIOD

Basterds was good for 15 minutes.......after that first scene the movie went so far down hill it was ridiculous. That movie was a joke. That whole crew, with the exception of ze german......was a giant brooklyn joke. And of course they killed the german off early.......terrible! AFter the first scene, the only good part was the running wrist shooter to the face at the end........

lol. Cameron has even admitted more than once that the story and dialogue were the least of his concerns. The plot was one big cliche that was done better at least a few times before (Dances with Wolves, The New World, etc).

Doesnt mean that the movie was bad, but aside from the 3D immersion and the action there was nothing spectacular about it.

And lol @ The Hangover being the best movie of the year.

Basterds is far and away Tarantino's best film. Theres no other way to describe it is pure Hitchcockian when you consider at least 3 extended scenes where a ridiculous amount of tension is built just through dialogue (the scene with the Nazi soldiers in the bar is my favorite).

Also, the movie (even despite the title) wasnt about the Basterds. It was about Shoshanna and Hans Landa, who is the best character of the year and Christoph Waltz (who played him) gives one of the best performances of the decade in bringing him to life. Up there with Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.

uh oh. this just became a must see for me

It was good. But alc says its one of the best movies hes ever seen.

I wonder how many movies hes watched during his lifetime?

i think what 75th is saying is that alc is a retarded child.

i might see avatar today. what else is good out there right now? i also wanted to check out ninja assassin just for nips and tickles, but not tonight.

Sherlock Holmes was alright. Avatar is a better time.

Up In The Air with The Clooney is an all around good flick as well. A much better film overall than Avatar, but obviously it depends on whether you like that type of adult comedy/drama.

up there with Daniel Day lewis in TWBB? You're smoking right? And no that was certainly not even close to Tarantino's best film. That honor still belongs to the fiction with the KB movies not too far behind.

Saw Avatar with the better half on Boxing Day. Eh it was alright, not really digging the new style "animation" or w/e it is, hard to get immersed in the film compared with District 9 which is personally my movie of the year. Guess the Warcraft movie will be using Avatar-style animation.

2012 was same duration & admittedly kept my attention better during the 2'5+ hours.

The colonel was pretty bad ass though, more a grizzled SNCO than officer though.

Negatory my son. Basterds > Fiction. Also, how can you not be in awe of Waltz's performance?

lol! Sherlock holmes beats Avatar so it's reign was only one weekend. As a result people are PISSED and the marketing/numbers war has started today to ensure whose headlines takes center stage tomorrow! It's gonna get bloody kids:

"Sherlock Holmes" beats out "Avatar" at box office

Gotta love marketing wars :)

Avatar beat Sherlock by a few million. They called it for Sherlock erroneously at first because they didnt take into account the surprisingly high Saturday and Sunday numbers for Avatar.

and that's exactly what it was save for the first 15-20 minutes. I'll give the first scene credit, it was one of the most well done parts of a movie maybe ever. Which makes it so inexplicable what the film degenerated into.

Top 10 movies ever? Thats a hard list for me to put together. I tend to judge not only by quality but also re-watchability. In no particular order, I know the list would include:

- Saving Private Ryan
- Braveheart
- Basterds (narrowly edging out Jackie Brown, which was his best prior to Basterds)
- Memento
- In Bruges
- Heat
- Wall-E (either that or UP)

Thats off the top of the ol noggin.

Finally saw it. Basically dances with the wolves wiht a very predictable plot - but people go for the visuals and 3d, not story.

Was good - but cinemjatography sucked. Very few 'wow', 'kewl!' breathtaking momenets like in star wars, transformers or lord of the rings. As such it's not one of those 'let's watch it again' type movies, but visually nice.

7- Heat
8- Snatch
9- Forrest Gump
10- Avatar or the Hangover (not too sure which one)

^^I'm sure I can replace 1 or 2 of them with another if I think this through, but this is off the top of my head...in no particular order, except Braveheart is #1 for sure.

Italian Job? The original or the remake?

Either way...dude......

Also Boogie Nights is on my list as well.

I thought a lot of the stuff when they were flying the dragon things looked pretty good. Gave a good sense of speed when they were diving, and also when Jack was trying to escape that pissed off beast in the forest....damn. Plus it was all in 3D. Nothing like that in those other movies you mentioned. I never thought Transformers was anything special either. Great special effects yeah but the only "wow" moment in that movie was probably when Optimus was getting his ass kicked in the woods. Other than that it was basically like 2012 on a smaller scale, with robots. Senseless destruction. Transformers also fails as far as making the audience feel anything. Well, maybe kids started crying when Optimus "died" lol.

The other thing is I don't see how Sherlock Holmes even came close to Avatar in numbers this weekend. I went to Avatar this morning and even the non 3D showing was sold out. On a Monday morning.

Avatar will be in the top 2 for at least the next 4-5 weeks. Gonna continue making a shitload of bank.

The main complaint i heard from many leaving the theater was 'it was too long'. Cameraon made one very bad mistake: most films have at least 3 "areas". this movie had only TWO: inside ship, and jungle.

This alone is what made it seem much longer to audiences. (eg:titanic had: inside ship drama, outside ship romance scenes, ending water crash).
(eg2: star wars had tattoine, inside death star, dogfight in space, all visually different).

I'm glad another grown adult non gay male like wall-e as much as I did. I was blown away by that movie. Just thought I was taking my nephew to go see a movie so his parents can get a breather. Turns out the little adhd faggot (I say that with luv) barely watched the movie and wanted to run around the theater and it was me that was transfixed......:whatever:
