Avatar financially was a flop. $70M nowhere what execs where hoping for. In comparison, Twilight made $140M in a weekend. Double what avatar made:
'Twilight: New Moon' mania rakes in $140 million opening weekend - From Inside the Box - Zap2it
'Twilight: New Moon's' gross of $140.7 million puts it at third all-time for an opening weekend. It pulled in $258.8 worldwide, according to studio estimates
Don't forget, avatar cost 5x what new moon cost. Don't expect an Avatar 2

avatar was released on a really shitty weekend. week before christmas...seriously?
and the promotion for it wasn't not done right.
but to say don't expect an avatar 2 is retarded. you don't know how the film will do internationally or if box office sales might be steady as opposed to heavily sloped.
and i doubt the producers of the movie are using "new moon" as their basis for comparison. Especially since that POS movie built its brand through books and a really crappy movie before that. So no, that's a shitty comparison. lol. in business,it's about YOUR bottom line, not someone elses
seriously, GTFOH
Do you know what profit is? It's all about benjamins yo. Even if it made as much money as twilight (i doubt) - twilight will still make 5x more profit cuz it cost way less.
End of the day: Do you want to be a avatar producer or a twilight producer? Which will allow you to buy your own island?
c
What does that have to do with Avacor being an alleged "flop?"
And lol @ talking about "profit" in Hollywood when technically on paper Forrest Gump is still listed as a flop.
If only the writers in Hollywood were half as creative as the accountants.

Once upon a time—before the TV and VCR—studios earned virtually all their profits from a single source: the theater's box office. Nowadays, in the new Hollywood, the world box office is a money loser: In 2004, the studios lost an estimated $2.22 billion on the $7.4 billion they took in from the box office.
Flop = (money invested - money returned) = profit / expectation.
go read the dailies if u want to be more educated. it's not my job to explain basic finance to you on the internet.
Whatever the reason - avatar will barely squeek out a profit if it even does. The days of studios making massive profits from big huge movies are over - it's the new moon's, hangovers, sex in the city and paranormal acitivies that are keeping the studios in business, paying peopels paychecks and allowing movies like avatar to be made.
and stop listening to what cnn says.
Hollywood's profits, demystified. - By Edward Jay Epstein - Slate Magazine
[/QUOTE]Jesus.
Avatar is officially the #1 December opening of all time. It did $250 million internationally over the weekend. This does NOT include territories like Japan (where it will make a shitload), China, and a large portion of Europe.
Assuming the budget (with marketing) was between the unofficial numbers of $300-400 million, no matter how you look at it both Fox and Cameron are sitting pretty right now.
Any movie that makes back 80% of it's total cost PLUS marketing in 1 weekend is not a flop.
c
I'm not arguing...just asking him to explain how Avatar is a "flop" in his mind.
I anticipate some comments about Obama, white men on Wall Street, and American Idol if an explanation ever arrives.
RG said:Avatar financially was a flop.
So....do you recant and now simply argue it won't make people billions of dollars in profit?
Cause being a flop and not being as profitable as another movie are two different things.
Flop seems an extreme term. You're not 2% bf, you're fat. Perhaps, "not a blockbuster" would be more appropriate.
And besides, it's premature to make conclusions on it's profitability since it's not had to opportunity to earn money on DVD sales. Also, is there gonna be any merch on this flick?

It's actually quite tough to get a movie into profit
What percentage of movies lose money overall? | Ask MetaFilterThe usual rule of thumb in Hollywood is that 75% of all studio movies lose money
Amazon.com: The Big Picture: The New Logic of Money and Power in Hollywood (9781400063536): Edward Jay Epstein: BooksEdward Jay Epstein is here to tell us that when it comes to Hollywood these days, we've got it all wrong. Each week the box-office grosses rung up by the big new movies are published, and each week it is near universally assumed, reflexively and reverentially, that they represent not merely an accurate ranking of current films but also an accurate record of how much they are making for the studios that produced them.
These seemingly huge earnings are wildly misleading, as the cost of making, distributing and showing new movies almost always far exceeds what they earn in theaters.
If a film does not at the very least recoup its production budget, it almost is certainly a disappointment to the studio releasing it.
nangiggles is that you in your avi?
Anyway, bakemeafuckincookie I agree with you just because you do your research and I'm the same way. I love chat
is it based on the series or is it a coincidence?

Coincidence. M Night Shaymalanamanayman is making an Avatar: Last Airbender movie now.
Gladiator, just wondering if that's the same amount of research you did on how the swine flu vaccine was a gubment conspiracy to kill us all.

from the reading i've been doing it appears that RG is the only person who considers this movie a flop.
But the majority of people also voted for bush, and look how well that is treating them.
HA!

Hey Bino,
1.) It's 2009, Bush isn't in office anymore.
2.) In 2000 the majority of people voted for Gore. Bush won through the electoral college loophole.
3.) In 2004 the majority voted for Bush because we were all ready to bomb the fuck out of the Middle East...guess that's the part you were talking about.![]()

I watched it in digital 3d....I loved it...it's got everything a good movie should have, a greta plot, good acting, adventure, visual effects, tech gadgets, freaky aliens, human / alien interaction, furious battle scenes, good fight scenes, inspirational speeches, etc....
Inglorious bastards was not that great IMO.
For me, the best movie this year was the Hangover PERIOD

That whole crew, with the exception of ze german......was a giant brooklyn joke. And of course they killed the german off early.......terrible! AFter the first scene, the only good part was the running wrist shooter to the face at the end........

uh oh. this just became a must see for me
i think what 75th is saying is that alc is a retarded child.
i might see avatar today. what else is good out there right now? i also wanted to check out ninja assassin just for nips and tickles, but not tonight.
Basterds is far and away Tarantino's best film. Theres no other way to describe it is pure Hitchcockian when you consider at least 3 extended scenes where a ridiculous amount of tension is built just through dialogue (the scene with the Nazi soldiers in the bar is my favorite).
Also, the movie (even despite the title) wasnt about the Basterds. It was about Shoshanna and Hans Landa, who is the best character of the year and Christoph Waltz (who played him) gives one of the best performances of the decade in bringing him to life. Up there with Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.
up there with Daniel Day lewis in TWBB? You're smoking right? And no that was certainly not even close to Tarantino's best film. That honor still belongs to the fiction with the KB movies not too far behind.
Avatar beat Sherlock by a few million. They called it for Sherlock erroneously at first because they didnt take into account the surprisingly high Saturday and Sunday numbers for Avatar.lol! Sherlock holmes beats Avatar so it's reign was only one weekend. As a result people are PISSED and the marketing/numbers war has started today to ensure whose headlines takes center stage tomorrow! It's gonna get bloody kids:
"Sherlock Holmes" beats out "Avatar" at box office
1) Sherlock Holmes beats out Avatar at box office | Reuters
'Avatar' wins second week in a row
2) 'Avatar' wins second week in a row
Gotta love marketing wars

Negatory my son. Basterds > Fiction. Also, how can you not be in awe of Waltz's performance?
The trailers made Basterds look absolutely retarded, basically nothing more than a slapstick orgy of Jewish revenge.
Ya...which is why I wasnt too excited about seeing it...especially after suffering through Death Proof.
Boy was I wrong.
Saw Avatar with the better half on Boxing Day. Eh it was alright, not really digging the new style "animation" or w/e it is, hard to get immersed in the film compared with District 9 which is personally my movie of the year. Guess the Warcraft movie will be using Avatar-style animation.
2012 was same duration & admittedly kept my attention better during the 2'5+ hours.
The colonel was pretty bad ass though, more a grizzled SNCO than officer though.
It was good. But alc says its one of the best movies hes ever seen.
I wonder how many movies hes watched during his lifetime?
I watch 3 movies a week with my wife.
I think I need to go out more, but we enjoy cuddling and watchin movies in bed.
I've been watching 3 movies a week for the last 3 years. That's a lotta movies orb
D9 kicks ass

It is...but you do not want to challenge my film experience, young orb.
Did you watch Basterds, btw?
Most mainstream movies aren't my cup o' tea.
Here's my pick for movie of the year.
hahaha i think you've met ur match bro
i liked bastards im a tarantino fan
D9 was awesome too
both movies dont compare to avatar
what are your 10 all time favorite movies?
Top 10 movies ever? Thats a hard list for me to put together. I tend to judge not only by quality but also re-watchability. In no particular order, I know the list would include:
- Saving Private Ryan
- Braveheart
- Basterds (narrowly edging out Jackie Brown, which was his best prior to Basterds)
- Memento
- In Bruges
- Heat
- Wall-E (either that or UP)
Thats off the top of the ol noggin.
Finally saw it. Basically dances with the wolves wiht a very predictable plot - but people go for the visuals and 3d, not story.
Was good - but cinemjatography sucked. Very few 'wow', 'kewl!' breathtaking momenets like in star wars, transformers or lord of the rings. As such it's not one of those 'let's watch it again' type movies, but visually nice.

I thought a lot of the stuff when they were flying the dragon things looked pretty good. Gave a good sense of speed when they were diving, and also when Jack was trying to escape that pissed off beast in the forest....damn. Plus it was all in 3D. Nothing like that in those other movies you mentioned. I never thought Transformers was anything special either. Great special effects yeah but the only "wow" moment in that movie was probably when Optimus was getting his ass kicked in the woods. Other than that it was basically like 2012 on a smaller scale, with robots. Transformers also fails as far as making the audience feel anything. Well, maybe kids started crying when Optimus "died" lol.
The other thing is I don't see how Sherlock Holmes even came close to Avatar in numbers this weekend. I went to Avatar this morning and even the non 3D showing was sold out. On a Monday morning.
