this is a long read, but an intense, moving and harrowing read. well worth the time spent reading it, IMO.

it's the experiences of a close friend of mine, a EMT (paramedic) who stayed and tried to help those who stayed in the city of new orleans during the storm and the aftermath when the federall built & maintained faulty levies failed, flooding much of the unsuspecting city.

I'll read it.

Hard to believe it was 4 years ago! Where the hell does the time go...

How is it down there now? It is still torn up? I've never been to N.O.

that is a good read rnch

you know I've never had a problem working with a total blackout of communications
but its never occured to me how I'd work w/o my ambulance after my med bag was depleted
Ive never been utterly w/o supplies
food for thought

Yet nobody has been able to answer why people chose to stay.

Community pride. My hometown has fallen apart. All of the mills have closed. Unemployment is high. People love their community though.

Just look at the pride on this man's face. He'll never leave N.O. You can't put a price on that type of loyalty.

True that.

Brings a tear to my eye. :(

Unsuspecting? For several days before landfall there was talk of the fear of New Orleans flooding.

USC did a study that showed most bliques didn't leave for two reasons...they assumed they could ride out the storm and they didn't want to deal with "tha man" because they assumed he was racist.

In other words, ignorance.

1) The Federal Gov't doesn't build levees they contract the building of levees. If flood protection was a priority the levee system shouldn't have been designed to CAT3/4, but N.O. from a political perspective isn't much of a priority on the national level nor is the majority of the improvised residents. The gov't doesn't put out minimum contracts to secure Ft. Knox, butt then again that is a priority of theirs.

2) The Federal Gov't doesn't maintain levees. That is the responsibility of individual levee boards.
