How do you get HRT covered by insurance?

I think I need HRT and been calling these places that do nothing but HRT stuff, but none of those jokers take insurance and this shit costs upwards of a grand to get started. How can I get HRT covered by insurance, just walk into my general practitioner, tell him about it, get blood work, then have him give me a script for test? or what? thanks for info

You'd probably have a hard time with it at your age but I believe you'd have to try and get him to send you to an endocrinologist. I don't think the GP will do it himself.

I called this place and they quoted me about $100 for 3 months of test cyp therapy:

that sounds like the best deal yet

Get your GP to administer the blood tests and get a copy of the results yourself. If you're right in the normal range its a wash, but if you're borderline low, while your GP will probably say "it's still in the normal range" you should be able to hook up with an endo who will be sympathetic. What you want is to find one who has an interest in andropause.

Instead of HRT try googling andropause and your city.

It wouldn't benefit me to try it. My annual deductible is like $2,000...may as well go black market.

the test itself ain't that expensive if a real doc dispenses it

just the regular bloodwork and doc visits
+1 boy ain't that the truth! My husband basically has his blood drawn every six weeks to two months. Some of those tests would cost thousands if he didn't have insurance.

Test is cheap, he's got a shitty formulary and it's still only like $10 a bottle, if that.

Yes, to what others before me said.

But as a warning, unless you are in REAL GOOD with the endocrinologist (and even then he may not be willing to give it to you) you won't be gettin anywhere NEAR the doses that bodybuilders take.

I had my test levels checked 9 months ago and it was a 296 out of a 263-1596 range for normal. I did the math and thats basically in the lowest 3% and can still barely be normal. But the place I talked to said it needs to be 6 months current so I will go back in and hopefully it will still be low or lower than that last test. I dont think I would have a problem getting HRT with that.

i dont care about that shit anymore, i just want to have healthy energy and sex drive, memory, concentration back etc. if i can grease his wheels and shoot for "high normal range" than that still would be 4-5 times higher than my levels now.

yup. . .it's actually quite cheap. . .i never make it past my scrip deductible so i end up out-of-pocket for my test.

doc visits and bloodwork are free (after $20 co-pay).

the big thing that's gonna give you a problem is your age SD. . .i'm gettin' kinda long-in-the-tooth and my doc happened to know a lot about hrt so, it wasn't a real big deal for me to get what i needed. . .but, if you're under 40 (which you are, by quite a bit), i bet it ain't gonna be easy unless you are substantially low. . .unless you try one of those rejuvination clinics. . .but they are expensive, and your insurance ain't gonna cover that shit.

Gotcha chief...

As MM Andropause is as messed up as Menopause.

The Old Grump flet a gazillion times better once we got his test levels up.

the one in the link in my original post quoted me around $100 for 3 months for the drugs, which is out of pocket but the thing is the physical and bloodwork would be with a regular physician which is totally covered.

Also, I dont know if its relevant but does it matter what time of day i have my blood drawn for the hormone levels check? I mean, if its done in the morning will test levels be higher than if its done later in the day? I want the levels to appear as low as possible so i can get on some HRT. Im scheduled for 7AM friday but I can reschedule if that sort of thing matter.

really, what has he been taking, how much and for how long

I will have to go looksee in the bathroom at home. He's been on HRT since October 2008 I believe. He goes every 2/3 months gets his blood drawn.

It's oral test. We started out with the cream/gel. That stuff is NAS-TEE.

Dave, your levels are certainly low enough to be on HRT. My husband was right in that area (I lost the page of that lab, it was three years ago, me bad).

Currently, my husband is on 200 mg every other week of Test. Cyp. At his last blood work his serum test was 768 ng/dL (range 241-827) and his free test was 31.6 pg/mL (range 7.2 to 24.0). That was like eight days after the shot. He has to be careful. If he gets the shot done too close to the blood draw his levels go through the roof and his doctor pitches a fit. He's also on Arimidex and OTC Nolvadex (stuff works for him really well).

How has his life improved since taking the test cyp?

I qualified. I was below 300ng/dl on a 300 to 1,200 range.
The highest the Endo will go is 100mgs of test a week.
When my test came back at 302ng/dl insurance would not cover it. The cost out of pocket is $100/week!!!

i'm on 200mg every 14 days and it costs me around $100 every 150 days. . .
