Jury awards...... and other idiots...

Some of these rulings are unbelievable.............

Why we have lawyers In The U.S.A. !! 1. January 2000: Kathleen Robertson of Austin Texas was awarded
$780,000.00 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amok
inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the
misbehaving tyke was Ms. Robertson's son. 2. June 1998: A 19 year old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won
$74,000.00 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran his hand over with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman
apparently didn't notice someone was at the wheel of the car whose hubcap he was trying to steal. 3. October
1998: A Terrence Dickson of Bristol, PA, was exiting a house he finished robbing by way of the garage. He
was not able to get the garage door to go up, the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't
reenter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family
was on vacation, so Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of
Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. This upset Mr. Dickson, so he sued the homeowner's
insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of half a million
dollars and change. 4. October 1999: Jerry Williams of Little Rock, AK was awarded $14,500.00 and
medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a
chain in its owner's fenced-in yard, as was Mr. Williams. The award was less than sought after because the jury
felt the dog may have been provoked by Mr. Williams who, at the time, was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet
gun. 5. May 2000: A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, PA,
$113,500.00 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor
because Ms. Carson threw it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument. 6. December 1997: Kara
Walton of Claymont, Delaware, successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighboring city when she fell
from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while Ms. Walton
was trying to sneak through the window in the lady's room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was
awarded $12,000.00 and dental expenses.

Now don't go blaming the problems to the Attorney's.

The real problem is that stupid people who don't know how to get out of jury duty, are the ones who cause this kind of shit.

ANY NORMAL PERSON WHO HAS GOOD INTELLIGENCE WOULD VOTE AGAINST SUCH ABUSES OF THESE SUITS.

So what I am saying is that they ought to give people some kind of test for their IQ. If the fall below lets say 120, they are not suitable for jury duty. They can vote on elections, but considering the last election maybe they ought to do this to the voters as well.

I had a friend of mine who got a ticket for having red turn signals, not yellow on his motorcycle. It was a bad choice, but a retard was on the jury and that gave me
a real look at the idiots that end up on juries. Most were just plain stupid and you could tell just looking at them. Just plain white trash if you ask me. That is why things are so fucked up on such cases.

wow, lets say i got my hand run over but a car, slipped on soda, got my ass bitten by a dog, and i tripped and fell into a garage and got locked inside ALL within 2 minutes... geez id win a shit load of money :D

The money ppl win these days for stupid shit that that is unbelievable... you can win millions if you spill hot coffee on urself from like mcdonald's or starbucks

My friends small company recently had to award a black woman over 100 grand because she said her firing was racially motivated.

He told me that she was the biggest bitch and rude to every other employee, basically nobody liked her and she was bad at her job.

After this, it is understandable that they look at African American employees as potential liabilites. But if they don't hire a certain amount, they will get sued again. They can hire them, just not fire them. Doesn't seem quite right.

I can't wait to get to America just to sue somebody... I know, I'll get there and before I leave the plane I'll throw away my passport and all my travel documents. Then I'll sue airport security and customs for keeping me locked up while they're trying to find out who I am. Of course I won't tell them who I am, won't I... :D

hardgainer (I reserve the right to sue)

I agree, the lawyers bring these cases,.which are overloading the system, because unlike in England they don't have to pay the court costs for both parties if they lose and like others have said there is a good chance you will have idiots on the jury that will side with you.
When more and more people see these cases ending in victory, it will prompt even more suits because of the "I want to get mine too" mentality. There should be severe penalties for cases deemed frivolous.

The 2 cases I remember that were horrifying:

1) A guy sues a lawnmower manufacturer and wins becauses of the lack of proper safety warnings on it. Why you ask? He used the damn thing to cut a hedge of bushes and it tipped over and he cut his foot or hand off, I don't remember which. His lawyer cited the lack of a proper warning label on it saying not to use the thing as a hedge trimmer
2) A person trespasses on some old lady's property, goes sledding down a hill in the snow, and hits one of her trees sustaining injuries. He sues the woman for having the tree there in that spot and wins!

The litgation model that we have is the best way of ensuring that companies make safer, better products; as well as ensuring that everyone is held ACCOUNTABLE.

There's nothing more American than the ability to resolve our differences before a court of law, before an impartial decision-maker.....

You've only focused on the few isolated, extreme cases. I'd be more than happy to posts a few cases where JUSTICE was served by attorneys and their hard work.....

RyanH, where is the line between a person's common sense/liability and the liability of a manufactuer or business owner?
As a lawyer, where would you draw the line? Unfortunately I think most of the lawyers in these cases just see $$$$$ instead of doing things for the good of society.
Would you agree that common sense/individual responsibility seems to be lacking in today's society?

I think every case like the ones posted above should go through a better paneled screening process. Instead of jury duty being the fullest extent of the public's involvement in cases, there should be a jury salary given to a panel of people who meet to decide whether to allow ridiculous lawsuits like this. Of course, a judge could overturn them as a check and balance, but in order to overturn them the judge would have to try and convince them the reasons legally why it should be allowed to cost taxpayer money.

Frivilous lawsuits should be screened a little more carefully. Just think if you were the family coming back from a much needed vacation to find some moron locked in your garage after b&e who then turns around and sues...nice to know in all of these cases that the "victims" were created by the judicial system. There should be a resume for each of the judges who don't throw out such cases immediately. Let the public know who is allowing these things to occur and how many times incompetency is going on.

Ryan-

the point is that our society is getting ridiculously litigous, and that people are winning absurd amounts of money for things that 99.9% of the population finds disgusting. Is that hard to admit?
