What Chris and I are referring to is how all forms of price-fixing except big labor-approved ones are deemed illegal.
- If pipefitters in an area decide they aren't going to work for less than $X per hour, it's considered protected, concerted activity.
up to a point right? They can try to renegotiate what they may consider a bad deal and the company has to listen to them instead of just firing them on the spot. Basically saying fuck you we've got 100k people to take your jobs. That's how it's worked in China and the permanent ngr class that system breeds is self evident. There is a point though where the arbitrator can tell the union they've overstepped and any further refusals on their part could result in them being mass fired and nothing will happen to the company. It's actually quite fair.
- If orthopedic surgeons in an area decide they aren't going to do a knee replacement for less than $Y per case, they get indicted for anti-trust violations and sent to federal prison.
Isn't that price fixing? And also, doesn't insurance have a dog in that fight? Can you imagine what a handful of Dr's like that could do to local business's policies? Plus we are talking about healthcare, not fitting pipe's together. There's just certain aspects of the free market that Dr's have to understand they don't have access to. It's the whole thing about being a "Dr" of medicine. Don't be a Dr if you couldn't give a fuck. Simple as that. I see your overall point though, some unions in this country have gone way way way overboard and you're right...the payoffs to the democratic party have insured that they don't get checked. The notion that Unionization overall is a socialistic evil is utter rubbish though. A simple glance back at history as well as looking at what's going on in other countries with their non unionized labor force is all that is necessary.
