New to the States: mail order address question: home or PO Box?

A PO Box seems to be of little worth IMO as it requires a definitive ID to open one up and an ongoing subscription from a payment source like cc or check. Am I missing something here?

I live in a apartment building in NYC with a doorman who signs for our packages and we pick them up from the front desk - which is great for valuable deliveries like gear for instance. So my first inclination is to use a different name on the order but using my real address and apt #. I wanted some advice on this.

I wanted some advice on the best practices to cover myself legally when it comes to mail ordering gear. Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated.

Hmm where I live we have a porter who often takes packages if you're not home. Problem is if you have your package sent to a different name he may refuse it simply cos the name is wrong. I had to have a replacement bank card sent to me whilst I was in the US, it had to be addressed to the actual registered occupant at the address I was staying at or the postman wouldn't deliver it.

As long as you don't have anything proving that you ordered/paid for the gear you ought to be ok, it's not your fault if someone decides to send you juice in the mail. At least that'd be my argument.

I just use my last name in my address to the supplier. That way I can say there's a ton of us... and this obviously was a mistake. At least that was my theory.
I has gear delivered to a PO box for a couple yrs to start b/c my ex would have flipped out if I had illegal items sent to my house. It worked fine too. Most suppliers do a good job of saying something random as the originator. I picked up several boxes one that didn't even fit in my actual box that they held behind the counter... no issues what so ever.
