How healthy is sushi?

Hi everyone!

I am new here and I just need to ask - how healthy is it. Lately, I have been eating a lot of it after discovering how to make one.

Any idea?

healthy is a subjective word..

is it good for a cutting diet?? no because of the white rice and the glycemic load of white rice..

the fish itself.. depends.. salmon yes, tuna, yes, fried anything no..

the seaweed wraps?? sodium issues, soy sauce, again no due to the sodium content..

so healthy?? better than mcdonalds for sure

Sashimi, raw fish served sliced without rice, has roughly 132 calories for 6 pieces. One tablespoon of regular soy sauce has 900 to 1000 milligrams of sodium, which is more than half of a day’s worth. Light soy sauce has about 25 per cent less sodium: 600 to 800 milligrams per tablespoon since sushi tastes bland without the soy sauce, you can have it but go easy with it

soy is bad.

soybean oil is worse.

hard to find sushi that isn't drenched in soybean oil. so my answer is no its not healthy UNLESS you make your own from scratch

have a fish/brown rice/veggie meal instead.. its the same thing as sushi but without the soy and fillers

typically the 'guys' i see at sushi bars are either overweight fat farts or skinny dweeb types. there is a reason for that. soy increases estrogen in the body and its like a magnet for bad things. and don't even get me started on the salt content in soy sauce. its like argueing the difference between a real authentic Italian pizza and the crap that is sold at Pizza Hut or papa johns. i think native Japanese who eat at american sushi restaurants are disgusted by the sorry excuse for sushi that is sold here. and vice versa if we went to Japan and saw a mcdonalds we would laugh at how the japanese think that is what americans consider a quality burger, its the same principle. I will make my own burger made of 100% grass fed beef on a wheat bun with real ketchup.. not the sorry excuse of a burger that is known as the big mac.

I have to agree. Depends on the sushi and the place.
I live in Japan but am originally from Hawaii so i have been to a lot of sushi places.

If you go with the standard sushi which is sushi rice (white rice cooked and mixed with vinegar) and some raw fish. It's pretty good. Fish is just cut, you can dip the fish in some soy sauce (I bring my own gluten free soy sauce) and eat. Japanese don't put the soy sauce on the rice either, only the meat. They do have a high sodium diet regardless.
Modern Japanese eat loads of fried foods and cakes and bread galore. I am gluten intolerant and I can't eat out anywhere because everything is either fried or is bread. And yes... Japanese people think mcds is quality American burgers.

Ima have to admit that i eat a lot of sushi on my diet and i get extremely lean (sashimi that is) . I also eat a lot of white rice on my diet and get great results. Soy sauce is poured all over the White Rice as i don't see any affect of sodium on a diet unless your getting on stage and then i would say cut it a week out.

Now as for soy oil I never knew that they put it on the fish and this upsets me. i never knew the affects of it either. I have been wanting to make my own and save a hella amount of money but i have no clue, living in the south where to buy fresh raw fish like All your tuna, white, fish ect. , staying away from the salmon though.

^^^ the cheaper sushi restaurants will use soybean oil cause its cheap. kinda like how cereal makers put high fructose corn syrup to sweeten up their products.

if you find an authentic sushi place (good luck) they won't use soybean oil. people don't care about it, they just want to go out to the cheapest place that has the best food.

hydrogenated oils, soybean oils, high fructose corn syrup must be avoided.

Sticky rice is made with sugar a lot of people are not aware of that it adds to the overall glycemic load.

Most good sushi chefs frown upon using soy sauce. I think alot of sushi nowadays is unhealthy unless you get a basic roll
