Do you think prenatal screening leads to abortions?

And if so is that a bad thing?

Should insurance companies who provide prenatal coverage be required to include prenatal screening that can detect genetic diseases?

I had genetic testing done/prenatal screening all the fun stuff! Does it lead to abortions? Which test? lol. Some might. I did almost every test I could so I could make a decision early if something was really serious and honestly abortion wasn't off the table (not that I would have gotten the abortion, I just wanted to know). I just wanted to know.

No, insurance shouldn't be required to cover prenatal screening if they don't want to.

Well given that early screening, if "positive", typically leads to atleast 1 more, more invasive testing (again, typically) you could make the arguement that even the most basic screening could lead to an abortion.

Or, prenatal screening can be a way of planning for the future of your child if you wouldnt abort a serious genetic disease.

What if you had shitty insurance that didnt cover prenatal screening?

Wouldn't it be in an insurance companies best interest to get fetuses that have serious genetic defects aborted rather than pay for expensive care later in the infants life?

My insurance covered everything that was offered except carrier screening (which is where I got my positive) which I paid for out of pocket because I still wanted it done. My insurance covered a lot of things I didn't need to have done that I got done anyway (fetal nuchal translucency). I doubt by 12 weeks I would have been down with terminating a pregnancy but I wanted the extra ultrasound. Lol.

I figure if it was in their best interest they would cover it. I'm not in the risk business, but I would assume they would want to cover it or offer a plan to cover it.

I'm guessing this is about Rick. lol.

Even though I was 40 while pregnant, I had none of those screening/tests done because I knew I couldn't decide to terminate regardless. Plus I just had a feeling everything was fine with my baby. I wasn't worried at all

Even if you weren't going to abort at week 12, would it be better to know the game plan then to prepare, or sit and worry for an additional 6 months and wing it?

It makes good sense to know either way.

And yes, this is about Rick. He has a 3 year old that has been in and out of the hospital nearly dieing several times since she was born. Luckily, he has rockstar insurance and the means to manage that financially. How do you think a single mom working at the Gap would fare in the same position?

What about couples wanting high-resolution sonograms? They can do it at 16 weeks now -- maybe even sooner.

Should insurance companies be forced to pay for it?

What if the only reason the couple wanted it was to abort the baby if it were a girl? Would that change your answer?

If we did it again, I'd insist otherwise. After seeing some examples of what its like to be "surprised" I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone.

Chris, you need to act like the goddamn man of the house and stop letting smurfy make all the fuckin' decisions...

That's a pretty valid point, in a certain way it is in their interest as well to cover these screenings, maybe not every kind of procedure but a standard battery of tests at the very least.

Q # 1: That's not an indication for US. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine nor the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology support imagining for keep sakes. There are plenty of third party places that have some sweet GE machines.

Q # 2: That's not an indication for abortion and I don't know any provider that would proceed. If Mom and Dad find someone who will, that's on that particular provider. If mom takes an abortion inducing medication on her own, that's on her.

When it comes to screening, you can't make life and death decisions based on a screening tool. If screening is positive, you then move to a diagnostic procedure.

Well I feel like if something were really wrong then the 20 week anatomy scan would show it right?

There would likely be soft indicators that could suggest a myriad of problems, but it doesn't give you a diagnosis. You still don't know what to expect.

Yet many nicer OB/Gyn practices routinely use their fancy GE machine for gender determination during the lunch hour!

And what's with this "indication for an abortion" business? Abortions are legal in all 50 states, regardless of indication. I'd think if a patient walked into planned parenthood and wanted an abortion because their kid would be born under the wrong zodiac sign, they'd gladly proceed with the procedure.

Sure, I don't know if I would have aborted at any point but I wanted to know everything I could, so either I could abort if we were talking serious stuff or I could at least be prepared emotionally. I see nothing wrong with that. At the same time, I don't really like the idea of forcing an insurance company to take on a risk they wouldn't otherwise. If it was in their best interests then they'd cover it? Why wouldn't they? Not sure what Rick said, I just knew he made a comment about prenatal tests today. Lol Rick and his sweater vests...

1. But you code it as a growth scan or something that is reasonable to indicate the need for US.

2. Providers are not forced to do whatever patients want. I have no problem with referring someone to an abortion provider who's life is chaos and they have the insight to know that they cant manage appropriate prenatal care nor support a child once they are born. But if someone told me they wanted to abort because they found out it is a girl, I have no problem telling them they'll have to find someone else.

Also, I don't work for planned parenthood.

I know you don't work at PP. To me, gender selection is an interesting test case for abortion on demand though.

Only if they can determine that most people would probably terminate the pregnancy once diagnosing is done. So, it might be in their best interest to cover certain things, idk I figure if it's in their best interest they would. Should a woman be forced to terminate if the insurance company is forced to cover all of this?

My 12 week NT scan was fun. Lol I was 28, I have no idea why they even offered it. I got to see Abby at 12 weeks, moving and sucking her thumb. 12 weeks! It was awesome. It was super expensive though. I had to be admitted into the hospital and everything.

For first trimester screening?

I don't know why you would be admitted. Maybe the nice US machine was on the OB floor?

I was looking at a GE handout today that listed CPT codes for various procedures. US for NT was like 150 bucks. And they probably reimburse half that.

Yep. They offered it at my first visit and I said I wanted it. I forgot so they called me my 12th week they called me and said I needed to get in ASAP if I still wanted it done, so idk if that was an issue or not. I got the codes and called my insurance company and it was all good. I got a copy of what they sent my insurance company and it was over a grand. My carrier screening alone was 1200.00

So you mean, altogether it was over a grand? That I can see. I thought you just meant the US. Did u get a scan at 28-32 weeks for growth?

Since we're on this sort of subject, what should happen to the parents of infants who die as a result of unsafe sleeping practices? Everyone receives proper sleep practices counseling before they leave the hospital after delivery. (We're not counting home birth people for simplicity's sake.) The risks have been explained. I say charge them with manslaughter.

Yeah, the entire NT screening sorry. I thought that was expensive for a scan and a prick of blood. Lol. Unless there was some things I don't remember that I had done that day. And, that's not counting my insurance discount I'm sure. It's been too long for me to remember.

I had a six week scan, the 12 week NT scan, and a 20 week scan. I didn't get a scan at 28 weeks for anything in particular. I did get one around that time just for fun.

People will disagree with me, but I call that good prenatal care.

lol I also had to watch a video on not shaking my baby and have my car seat inspected before I was allowed to leave the hospital. :)

It's pretty bad here in Milwaukee. I'm going to the local Summit on Preventing Infant Mortality this year for our group.

That's too bad. I know a lot of parents do it, they think it's best but I'm too anxious to try things like that. I even used breathable bumper pads because I couldn't sleep well with regular bumper pads even with the angel care monitor. I became an anxiety ridden mess Abby's first year. Lol.

what a thoroughly depressing topic all the way around...screening, abortion, gender, smothering babies

fuck arent you just the life of the fuckin place

the woman that killed her TWINS cosleeping should be fucking executed

putting the baby in the bed with you...

hippies think it actually prevents sids because the baby's breathing is more even when touching mom (probably true but idk) and someone will wake up if the baby stops breathing and actually be able to do something about t

th rules to actually make it semi safe are insane...like mattress on floor, no blankets pillows, tight fitting sheet...no walls within several ft..no alcohol, drugs of any kind (herbal, otc, script whatever) no apnea/sleep disorders

its absolutely fucking retarded...a bassinet or moses basket or hell a crib in the room is fine

Lol, my son slept in my bed sometimes. I remember always waking up freaked out like I rolled over on him. I'd friggin poke him and he'd make his lil sleepy noise and I'd go back to sleep.

the idea has always completely freaked me out...now fallen asleep unintentionally with my kids Ive done but I always woke up totally panicked and in a short amount of time

omfg now I know why you started the thread. He says that prenatal testing more often than not leads to abortion that's his reason...not insurance companies/money/etc. He would get rid of it altogether if he could I bet because he thinks its WRONG lol. Rick is kinda scary. Life is so much more messy and gritty than the perspective of some sweater vest wearing patriarchal douche that wants to spout off his views of his own absolute morality. Why is he even talking about that

Numerous times since my baby was born I would wake up thinking she was in the bed and getting smoothed and I'd be all frantic liking for her, thing a pillow or blanket was her lol sleep deprivation will do crazy things to your mind. She has never even slept in our bed. I guess I was just paranoid

He's completely against abortion and has problems with contraception. Fucker wants to dial society back 50+ years. Delusional buttwipe.

That shit won't fly in today's society/economy. Most families need two incomes and that means a woman can't be popping out kids like a popcorn machine (I'm not even going touching on the growing threat of world overpopulation). Premarital sex will NEVER go back to being stigmatized.

Frankly, you'd think insurance companies would be all in favor of prenatal screening. I would expect that most people who opt for it want to know what's going on with the fetus at least entertaining the idea of aborting in the event of severe disabilities. A child with disabilities is a huge drain on the insurance company. Wouldn't they want to get rid of that liability?

Dude really I was a member of one of the most elite tactical fighting units in the history of mankind. My oldest son playes college football on a full scholarship, my youngest son is the most dominate fucking athlete at 14 I or you have ever seen, from the 300lbs bench to the 405lbs squats for reps and the 11.2 100m to the sub 4.5 40 times, to the 20 Hr JV basweball seasons, to the being an All State varsity baseball player in the 8th grade. And as far as the marriages bro, well all I can say is that war has been known to change a man, but the first one was cartainly on me, my wife came to my apartment in Chattanoga unexpected and caught me in bed with three bitches from the noght before, that was all my fault. This was the case on our last child as well. What was the point if you were not going to abort.

As far as what insurance should and should not pay for, that is what market forces are for. If your insurance does not pay for something you want, switch insurance companies or complain to your benifits department so they can pressure the insurance company and such. Likewise if your insurance coveres something you find morally offensive.

Cardinals and Govt need to stay on the sidelines. We got this.

who decides to terminate the pregnancy??

why not do gene mapping and determine if a person is predispositioned to get cancer and thus not allow for that type of medical coverage??

same thing for heart attack and stroke..

with that said.. my wife and I did the prescreening for our child, but we had several factors against us, one being her age, which was 39...

If the child had been diagnosed with down syndrome we reasoned that at least we could have been prepared and have things in place to care for the child..

Killing it invetro was never an option for us..

Everyone should be aborted in this thread, except for SB, plank, and Cindy. Oh and bino too
