Michele Bachmann: Beware 'the Soviet Union' - latimes.com

For Michele Bachmann, the hits keep coming. While on the campaign trail earlier this week, she mixed up Elvis Presley’s birthday with the day he died. Now, she has apparently brought an Elvis-era menace back from the dead, citing in an interview the growing might of—the Soviet Union.

According to the liberal website Think Progress, Bachmann, whose grasp of history on the trail at times has been somewhat shaky, said during a radio interview Thursday that Americans today are mindful of the threat posed by a rising U.S.S.R., which, like Elvis, left the building a long, long time ago. (Listen below.)

“What people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward,” Bachmann said on conservative activist Jay Sekulow’s show. “And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama, and the first thing he’ll whack is 500 billion out of the military defense at a time when we’re fighting three wars. People recognize that.”

It was the second historical gaffe in a week for the Minnesota congresswoman, who was flying high after her win in the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa last weekend.

Bachmann, of course, famously suggested earlier this year that the battle of Lexington and Concord, which kicked off the Revolutionary War, was fought in New Hampshire. And she flubbed John Wayne’s Iowa birthplace in June.

And then during the GOP debate last week in Ames, she claimed that Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating validated her belief that the debt ceiling should not have been raised, when the rating agency said that exactly the opposite was the case.

Bachmann is a charismatic and talented performer on the stump, and her ardent fans probably don’t care if she takes a few historical mulligans now and then. But her competitors are watching, and it would not be a surprise if they try the same line of attack in the future that Tim Pawlenty took in the Ames debate when he charged that Bachmann has, "a record of misstatements and false statements.”

Then again, look what that approach did for Pawlenty.

The hits just keep coming from this ignorant bitch.

None of these politicians get their pesky facts right. Kinda like thinking theres 57 states.

If her platform was defeating all Soviets with 2150psi she would win a Raygun-esque landslide victory

Oh wow! A media pundit trying to make a female conservative candidate look flakey? I've never seen that before!

I'll declare her a flake when she takes a trillion dollars and uses it to destroy a million private sector jobs. Once she crosses that threshold, I'll put both her and Barry in the same nutjob bucket.

Do you seriously, even for a fleeting second, think that the economy is doing well or that we are on the right track?

I fully believe you can understand a graph. Does this not show you who destroyed millions of jobs?
I posted a fact to your opinion statement on who cost millions of jobs. I didnt not state the economy was doing well or it was on the right track. But it is not shedding 750,000 jobs a month as it was early 2009. There is a clear point when the jobs stopped shedding and growth started in the graph. It wasnt magic or prayers answered by any religion.
I deal with Facts and not opinion when it comes to politics. If you want to argue about this simple fact, go ahead.

You're really wasting your time with him, then.

ETA in before plunkey calls me a name and tells me to eat candy his AA gives out!

Name one female conservative candidate on the national level that isn't a flake.

And most of the male ones as well. The GOP Presidential line-up looks like the graduating class from Clown College. The Mormons are the only two sane ones. The days of the intellectual conservative, such as Wm. F. Buckley or George Will are gone. The GOP is the party of AM radio listeners.

Let's try a compare and contrast exercise.

Who's more of a batshit crazy flake? Pelosi or Bachmann?

Now look at the energy expended to make Bachmann look bad versus Pelosi. I've never seen Bachmann tell us we have to pass a bill before we can see what's in it. I've never seen Bachmann tell us the CIA systematically lies to Congress (which is accusing a federal agency of a crime). And then, after making such a bombshell statement, I've never seen Bachmann refuse to take questions or pretend not to hear questions regarding the statement.

Yeah, the job market is pretty great right now.

And isn't it odd that the chart you posted chart ends on 5/10, well over a full year ago? I wonder what the rest of the chart looks like...

You take a miniature snap-shot of a 2 weeks and call that horrible? WEAK attempt to prove your point using a half a month and implying that month is the whole picture of the recovery.

No need to wonder how the rest of it looks like.
This his is how you show the big picture.
Obama-vs-Bush-on-Jobs-2.png

Now you see, the chart isnt linear. There are trends, and fluctuations, just like in the market, the world economy and retail. Like I said before, its not Magic and recoveries won't just climb perfectly.

Let's try directly addressing the post you're replying to, instead of changing the subject.

Name one truly substantial GOP woman in office or running for office.

You can't be fucking serious?

I wouldn't vote for Pelosi if she were running in a Presidential primary either, but Bachmann is orders of magnitude more wacky. Pelosi isn't nuts, she's just the typical deceptive, duplicitous career politician who buys into the system.

Does said chart represent the ngrs that gave up on the hunt and are content with laying on Sugar's leg?

didn't think so

I'm dead serious. Nancy Pelosi is an absolute nutjob. She's got more crazy than Palin, Bachmann and O'Donnel combined. What do you think are the chances of this specific picture appearing on the cover of Newsweek?

I refuse to believe our government would ever pick-and-choose data to lessen the appearance of our train-wreck labor market.

Typical. You say the graph doesnt show past 2010, i gave you a longer one.
You take a 2 week graph from the same place and use it to try to prove your point.
Then when you see that your point is disproven you imply "The government picks and chooses data to lessen the appearance of our labor market". Not even Par Plunky.... Hey go for the full monte and digress into short one liners and name calling.

Not even worth an intelligent reply...

Actually its a valid point. When workers stop looking for jobs and remove themselves from the labor pool, they arent counted in the unemoyment figures anymore, which artificially deflates the unemployment percentage.

I despise Pelosi, but with this comment you officially surpass Glad levels of lolability at any of your opinions going forward.

Palins just fucking retarded. If you wanna say Pelosi is crazier than Palin I'll buy that.

When you combine that with the dynamic duo of Bachmann and O'Donnell youre just trolling.

Funny, because the way you typed that was articulate and didnt revert to childish name calling and racist epithets.
To respond : The reason is simple. The only way they can acsertain those numbers is because of unemplyment insurance. Once that insurance runs out they cant be counted to get the True unemployment of America.
The same reason why they cant find out about people that are Underemployed(Pay/Position/Experience wise), working short hours, or those that took paycuts to stay employed.

Not really familiar with her record, apart from reciting the textbook GOP FUD over national healthcare reform, I seem to recall she was one of the people harping about "Death Panels".

Can you support this with examples, other than obviously Photoshopped images? Irrational belief systems? Statements of gross misunderstanding of history and facts?

Well there you have it -- she must be crazy. I can't believe she'd have the audacity to disagree with your point of view.

I'd start with this:

Comments: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: CIA Lied to Me - ABC News

When a sitting speaker of the house accuses a federal agency of a felony crime, then decides she doesn't want to talk about it anymore the next day, they are showing their nutjob behavior.

I'd let comments about 57 states or seeing alaska from your porch slide way before the crazy shit Pelosi spits out.

I don't find anything implausible or inconsistent in that. What happened in one day? She got the riot act read to her by someone. I find the remarks by Republicans in that article far more disturbing, especially:

"It's outrageous that a member of Congress should call a terror-fighter a liar," said Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., the vice chairman of the Senate intelligence committee. "It seems the playbook is, blame terror-fighters. We ought to be supporting them."

Of course you do.

So we should just give the "Terror-Fighters" free reign?

If the sitting speaker of the house believes a federal agency is intentionally misleading Congress (a felony), she can 1) Engage the DoJ and 2) Organize congressional hearings or 3) Initiate legislation to reign-in the agency.

Which one did Nancy do?
