Spending too much time at the gym? How much is too much?

healother

New member
I am starting to hit the gym hard again. I realized that I need to increase my fitness and my confidence, which will in turn help me to get women. Also it will give me something else to do with my time besides going online so much.

Right now I'd say, it's easy for my gym routine to take up to 2 hours of my day, which feels like a lot on weeknights when I only have a few hours per night as free time. I get home at 6-6:30, have supper, hit the gym by 7-8, and finish between 9-10pm. My commute to work is about an hour each day, so I have to get up at 7am, and I usually go to bed between around 11pm each night.

I figure spending too much time at the gym can hinder one's social life. Some evenings I find myself either having to compromise gym time or social time with friends, to fit stuff into my schedule. Hanging out with friends or going out some place on a weeknight is tricky, if you spend a lot of time at the gym.

Then again, the gym can help ones social life. One can meet people at the gym, or meet people elseware who share the same hobby. Also the confidence and the appearance boost at the gym is a wonderful way to attract members of the opposite gender.

So what do you think folks?

Spend as much time there as you like. Either way it isnt affecting things for you so may as well get in as good a shape as possible while you are young.

If youre improving instead of regressing in the gym then its not too much time.

What happened to your little honey?

she is in love with some other guy she is friends with, and is waiting for him to make some kind of move. If she fooled around with me again, she said itd feel like she was cheating.

I work in the IT dept at a college, but its a contract, will only last a few more weeks probably. we'll see.

I know, that kind of rack and body to match is like 1/200 :(

as long as you're not overtraining, it's not too much. but you probably are. i am guilty of this as well.

is there something else socially productive that you would be doing? spending time with your friends? fuck that...get in shape.

however, it's basically impossible that you would have a good reason to spend two hours in the gym every day. i'm talking about you in particular. going from little or no working out to 2 hours in the gym every day is, beyond any doubt, unnecessary.

and lol at the possible social benefits of actually being in the gym. don't sweat those very minor possibilities (anything could happen, but it makes no sense to use that as a reason to stay at the gym). that's a classically-fyxgel obsessive detail, though. nice.

one thinks that talking about ones self in the third person makes one seem obnoxious

also one must keep lifting until one is bumpy and sexy, like a walnut in a condom :p

No you wouldnt because you dont know what the hell to do once you are out. Hence why I said it doesnt make a difference either way for you so you may as well get into as good of shape as you can then worry about going out and getting chicks and just maintaining your level of shape in the gym.

WTF???? "walnut in a condom"???

Hey, healother,
a word of caution to you: careful dating (or otherwise), people from the gym...you don't ever want a place you like going to, to turn into a place you don't, having to avoid psycho chicks....men... tweekers...

I recently had a simple "business lunch" turn into freaking inquest, which ended up turning into a psycho stalker... I had to go to another gym for a few weeks until a friend actually set the guy straight... scary. really scary.

I had NEVER dated, let alone made eye contact with men at the gym. I spend 40+ hours between two gyms and dont ever want to feel like that again... eekkkkk!

:worried:

on second thought, (thanks SD) Healother, maybe a stalker would do you some good.... but somehow, I don't think it's in the cards. :lil k:

2 hours???

Screw that..I lift 2 days a week heavy and intense for about an hour each and I look better then 99% of guys out there.

life's way too short to spend that much time in a gym.

I don't overtrain. When I say 2 hours, I count driving time, shower time, stretch time, etc. I like to do cardio 6-7 days a week, and lift 3-4 days per week. but on days that i lift and do cardio, i lift first, and do the cardio later, and only do half an hour of cardio. (I try to do 45-60 minutes on cardio only days)

i havent worked out seriously in years so its time to kick myself back into shape through sweat, blood, or whatever it takes.

yeah, its really hard to pick up chicks at the gym. seriously, they seem so unapproachable, and the whole gym has their eyes on you, and the staff has their eyes on everyone too. and the chicks can be super focused on working out sometimes, headphones and what not. And if you fail and she blows you off, you still see that chick in your gym regularly. And pretty soon when you've hit on more then one girl, people start to take notice :(

It's never taken me more than 1.5 hours to lift and do 30 minutes of cardio. I always try to stick to that timeframe. Somedays when I do 2 bodyparts it can take up to 1 hour, 45 minutes, I try to avoid that though. Otherwise I get sick of it and depressed walkin into the gym if I know I won't be leaving for 2 hours every night.

so basically are you saying it's hopeless with the women?
lol, i hope not. I need encouragement not discouragement.

Sounds like a rotten experience! But so many people that would make for good dates are ones that we meet in our every day life: at work, at church, at the gym, at some club, etc.

If we are afraid of bumping into a stalker to the point where we only date people that we don't run into regularly, it makes finding dates a lot harder :( Chicks dig familiarity, and from what I can tell, they don't like it when random strangers hit on them. So sometimes, the people we see regularly are the best opportunities.

You don't think I'll get a stalker? Why is that?

No you dont need anymore encouragement, 6 years worth on EF should do plenty. What needs to happen is everytime you post up about women, no one replies, then you will be forced to either
1. Get out and do something instead of spending all that time on EF or
2. Do nothing and live like my virgin 30 year old brother that gets zero action.

But I know there is always people that will always reply to every single one of your posts, so its all just wishful thinking.

Healother, why the fuck do you ask for advice constantly if you never listen to any of it anyways? Im not flameing you, Im just curious

I go to the gym about 4-5 times a week (3 min)
I would love to go more but don't want to risk burning myself out.
As far as dating someone from the gym, I thought I would like to since my current (well, ex) beau didn't go at all and it would cause problems sometimes since I wanted to go. I thought having someone with the same interest would be nice. For me I wouldn't worry about it not working out because I have somehow remained friends with all my ex's.

lol at all the futile mentation over the social aspect. the detailed analysis of the gym scene...love it.

your focus (god help me for wasting my time) should be the effectivenes of your workouts, not the social aspect (not now, anyway). if you've just recently gotten back into training, and you're doing the schedule mentioned here...you will overtrain. so, ease up, especially on that cardio 6-7 days/week. i know it's hard when you're restless and you want to get somewhere NOW and you need something to really focus on...but you're spending too much time in the gym. again, i'm only speaking of your physical limits and needs...not anything social. however, once you ease up on all that working out (because you have to), you'll have more time for...whatever the fuck it is you want to do.

also, you should try to accept, if not embrace, the fact that you are insane. i'm not kidding. people like lestat and gambino do you an injustice by downplaying your online behaviour, or saying that you're simply a normal kid. while it's true that the issues your face, thoughts and feelings you have, etc. are normal in nature...your situation is not normal because of its obsessive extent.

furthermore, it's not normal because you post here in amazing detail. here, you're asking why you've only gotten so many replies? as if you haven't had 100s and 1000s before? as if you've indicated that it's done any good (not simply by saying so, that's meaningless)?

I would rather he be in the gym than be on here talking about his pathetic life.
So heal...hit the gym 7 days a week and ask the owner if he has a job for you.

you aint going to meet anybody on your computer or hanging out with your fucked up male friends who refuse to help you find a lady.

2 hours in the gym?
ewwww, you are gonna look all veiny and huge like those bodybuilder guys
gross
a 1/2 hour is all you need, 15 on the treadmill, 15 for some light smith benching

you forgot the 5 minutes for visor placement (must come correct with that shit).

(additional 2 minutes for proper collar poppage optional)

wearing a visor backwards increases my 1RM by 2.3%

I'm there less than 5 hours per week...and that includes cardio time

For some reason I think need to hear other opinions first, before I am comfortable picking my own opinion,
I know it sounds weird, but I think that this is the reason why.

Seriously though, if i didnt voice out my thoughts on these forums, they'd be spinning inside my head, and I'd be thinking constantly and be a complete wreck.

how do you remain friends with an ex if they were the one who dumped you, and you feel bad and depressed about it whenever you see them? People who don't give me a 2nd chance really frustrate me and i have trouble being their friend afterwards.

-we'll see about the overtraining,

-thanks for telling me im insane, that will make me get better.

-the point of this thread wasnt just for me, it was so others could get in a discussion about this as well, i thought itd be a great topic for a fitness forum, since many of us here are at the gym a lot.

let me guess:
you probably prefer to do your workouts faster than i do

and do less cardio because:

you either are much better at dieting than i am

or you have a higher metabolism.

I spend sometimes 3 hours there every Monday - Friday since January..

Lots of cardio.. 90 min total split in 2 sessions
Lower intensity, more and slower sets, variety of lifts.
5 min break in the middle for water etc
15 min of heavy stretching post w/o
Long hot shower afterward taking my time etc. (no, not jacking off)

Good to know someone else out there actually has to work to maintain a good body.
I'm sick of these peeps who work out for 20-30 minutes a day and say that they work hard for their abs.

cardio-shuffleboard with the gang
water is IV'ed in.
stretching is done with the aide of a nurse

I'm at the gym 2 hours or so, 5 days a week, and that is just lifting. I look forward to getting to the gym every day and actually have gone on my off days to do cardio.

When I was following the Bill Starr 5x5 and only lifting 3 times a week, I missed my time there.

Sure it helps that I belong to a fitrness club as opposed to a hardcore gym, there is plenty for my viewing pleasure to keep me busy during my time between sets. :)
