I Wasnt Going To Say Anything But...i Am Hurt

I dont know how serious it is , and maybe someone can tell me what i did.

Now remember i am very scared of injury. Two injuries in 2001 almost had me cal it quits. I am really only were i was last sept. No progress really. rehab is all i have basically been doing. It was my left rotator. Well...

Today Jimmie Dean and i went to do back at noon today. I havent used my suit and wasnt going to pull anythin over 500 but just wanted to feel if the suit was worth a shit. So i put it on and it was ok , kinda tight 500 of course shot right up very quick. BUt just in the mood of humor i chalked up and stood over in a sumo stance (i dont pull sumo). Got my feet right , reached down , did my rythem roll (dont ask) and pulled it cam up probably 18inches and POP! Something went in my upper right pec lower delt area. I mean a sharp pain. I couldnt do anything else. I went home and iced it and waited for a bruise to pop up. No bruise but it is swollen to hell on my right (my good never injured side)side. Its not un barable, but its visible swollen and a push up is out of the question. Basically i have been quite and in shock all day long. I have been very upset about it. No more rehab. I did a shit load of homework to take my mind off it but each time i turned the page i had a reminder. Its too soon to tell but my experience tells me its not an overnight thing. It probably started last night went up to 620 last night on the bench and was very (bad) sore. I am way over trained and hurt everywhere and ths is by far the worst of it.

Funny thing is it was the last workout till the 1st. I needed a long break cause i have been so run down. Then BaM! Anyone no what this could be? Is there signs i need to look for? The spot that hurts is #1 were the pain ful part is the grabs the bar when i squat. #2 i feel it perfectly there when i do a benching motion, but i can lightly flex my pec.

Its like this who knows in a week. I am freakin but its swollen and i cant move it well. Its not rotator or AC been there done that! I have trained so hard and heavy i feel if i cant compete it was all for nothign. SO i am not out of the meet yet. But my benching is priority number 1. And if this is a slight tear i am not gonna risk it. Without my bench i dont care about the others. BUt i just dont feel like rehabing anymore. I figured a week and a half off i would be good again. I ammore excited about squatting and pulling in this meet more then anything. But the over training is from shirting up and trying new equipment every week and not feeling confident inmy shirts and testing heavy all the time. I have benched over 600 every week since mid April. 4 or so weeks off rom the marc meet and i had handled 600 plus every week dam near from my Jan meet all the way to march, 4 weeks no shirt and all till now. My upper body is basically fucked up right now. My elbows are in flamed, my bi's hurt so bad i can flex them, i have a pinch in my upper left corner of my left pec, now this. Sorry for the rant but i am sittn here for the 6 th time today with ice on me at 11pm freakin again.

Any thoughts on what i need to do? I have a massage (deep tissue ) monday. That may help some.

Bro, I hope your alright... May just be a pulled muscle somehow??? Hopefully with your ice and message, it will be good for your Meet.... can you have a Dr. check it out?

Fuck, Jay! I can't believe you're injured. You must have seriously overtrained your upper body to strain something pulling deads. You did the right thing by stopping the workout and icing the injured area. Definitely check for bruising in the morning. Sometimes it takes the blood a while to pool at the surface, especially if it is a deep tear. If there is swelling ,then that is obviously an indication that some serious trauma has occured. Typically, with a minor strain the swelling is minimal. When there is a major strain or tear then swelling can be significant. From your description of the injury, I would say that the trauma is in the pec-delt tie-in which is always susceptible to injury due to the constant pounding it takes. My recommendation is to continue to ice it often (20 minutes on & then 20 minutes off), take your anti-inflammatories and try to keep the area immobilized. If there is bruising and it's significant I would have an expert look at it. Shit, Jay, I feel for you man but don't let it get you down and try to be positive. It may be nothing more than a minor sprain. I have a nagging oblique that I've sprained twice in the last six weeks and eventually I'll get that mother fucker where it needs to be and it won't bother me anymore. The same is probably true for you as well. Don't give up on the meet until you know how bad the injury is. The next week with no activity may put you back stronger than ever. I know lifters that have overcome injuries days before competing and still hit the number they were shooting for. Keep your head up!

Jay, one more thing about pulling deads. I don't know about your technique but right before pulling the weight it is effective to pre-pull the bar in order to get everything tight before actually pulling the bar off of the floor. Many times if a lifter just reaches for the bar and yanks it without having everthing tight then tears can occur in the biceps, forearms and shoulders due to the ballistic forces.

Screwball is right. It could be a deep tear since the lack of bruising.I would second the idea of getting it looked at.I would seek a sports doc that deals with athletes though.I hope everything works out, stay positive!Keep us posted!

i know u prolly dont want to go to a doc and u want to hear that u should just ice and rest and everything will be fine, but a doc could prolly give u better info than any of us. you definately have been pushing the limit for a long time. it seems that your body needs a big rest. it'll tax the system to go so heavy so often. i hope everything gets better and u can have a swift recovery.

sorry bro!! ouch!!

ahem... by the way ....take a week (-10 days) off....including lower body
look at your own writing ....you are incredibly strong...would you recommend to someone else to train like you do?? probably not..
using those kinds of weights that long? You would tell them they are crazy and inviting injury..You are an outstanding lifter........and human........you will come back stronger....Get well!

Jay -- I know I have told you this before, and now may not be the right time to say it again, but I'll say it anyhow. You have got to change how you train. I am not saying you have to switch over 100 percent wsb, but whatever you are doing isn't working. If you keep banging yourself up you will not last. One of my partners who you will meet June 1st, had a problem with using too much shit. He flipped out on everyone, inlcuding us. I had to tell him to back way off what he was using because no one cares if you go to yoru first meet and squat 750 -- a lot of people haev done that, but you need to be around in a couple years to squat 900. Your problem is not the same as his but the advice is still the same. You're in this for the long haul, right?? I by no means haev the greatest total out there but I have been competing injury free for 6 or 7 years. I make steady progress every year. Lift in the meet if you can, but not at the expense of killing yourself. Also, don;t do anything stupid like using nubain -- you will regret that. Only lift if you can handle the pain and still have a shot at pr's. If your bench is your priority then treat it as such.

Jay I really fell for you bro!
PLEASE take it easy and get it checked by a Dr
you've come WAY to far to give up or worse go ahead with a potentially serious injury and and really damage yourself.

REST and ICE and DAMNIT go see a Dr!

PLJay, I am really sorry to hear about the injury.

As I have said to others, go see a specialist that works with
athletes. You may or may not have done something serious.
If it is not serious and you do not have it checked, you will be
needlessly worried for months. It will put a hurting on your
training and competition. If it is serious, it is best to get on top
of it now so that you are back to full speed that much sooner.

Usually these types of injuries turn out to be muscle strains
that heal quickly. However, there is no way to tell unless a
qualified specialist looks at it. The peace of mind alone is worth
the trip to the doctor or therapist.
