Your 1 best recipe for a longer life...

Reduced calorie intake. Studies on some lower animals show increases in lifespan of 50% from calorie reduced diets. I know we're not rats but I think it's a safe bet that if you operate at the minimum food intake to support good energy levels you will live much longer. Ever seen a fat centenarian?

well that wont help you build much muscle !

reading the nightmares on these boards lately it sounds like you will live a lot longer if you don't do DNP :mix:

I believe that caloric restriction is the single most important thing one can do to lengthen life, provided the food is sufficient in nutrients. I have no proof of this. I do know that ever since I've dropped my calories from 2700 to 1600 and maintained for about a year, I've felt better in all catagories.

The next thing that has been said to increase life span is lowered body temperature. Many scientists say that there is a pattern indicating that species with the highest resting body temperature, and the lowest body temperature among that species lives the longest. What you can do about this is limited. I would think that a lowered body temperature would be a symptom of good health and not something one should go about directly changing with medication.

As for taking anti-oxidants (and suppliments), I have yet to see any studies that indicate taking anything above the RDI will help to extend life, lest you had some kind of sickness that would prevent utilization of these nutrients, even then mega-dosing might not help and could have adverse effects- It doesn't seem to help much with cancer patients as far as studies show. Actually the only thing going for cancer seems to be Chemo and faith, at least in my opinion.

And of course 'balance.' Balance in everything- money, food, sex, partying, excercise, mood, bodyweight etc. As for the defintion of balance, your on you own for that. :)

I think genetics plays more of a role than we actually realize; I work in the medical field, and day after day I'm amazed at some of the patients I see.
Some are so diligent with their diets, health, and very knowledgable. Yet they fall to many of the illnesses that plague people who DON'T watch their health.
And on the other end of the spectrum, I've seen many people live well into their 80's and 90's(and not beddridden, still mobile and active), yet are oblivious to any form of exercise, supplements, or healthy diet. It just makes me shake my head and wonder.

Now, as for me, I've taken my anti-oxidants, do the gym thing, live in "moderation". Will I live to be 100 and feel 30? Heh, who knows. One thing I am sure of is that supplementing with high dose vitamin C and E, along with a multi-vitamin (the only consistant supplements I have taken over the years) has kept me looking young. I'm only 30, but I'm often mistaken for 20 or younger.

But..and this will emphasis FunkMasterFlex's point. I work shifts, and the past few years have taken a toll on my immune system, and general energy levels. Sleep depravation will age you FAST!

So...my formula? Take your anti-oxidants, watch your diet, get your exercise, and get plenty of sleep. Boring, eh?

There's no magic bullet or fountain of youth.

How can you be so sure? Is it possible your just putting faith in your suppliments and granting them faulty appraise?

You are right, I am putting faith in them; Unless a double-blind study comes out saying that, "yes, taking *this* will make you look younger, and this study proves it..." it's all pretty much anecdotal anyways.

It's either the supplements, or killer genetics that has kept the signs of aging away so far. I'll put my money on the anti-oxidants. :D

There have been many studies that show anti-oxidants work.
