Younger lifters and overtraining

definately. as you get older is when you have to train smarter and lift according to your body. or at least throw in enough gpp active recovery that its like your still young.

on a side note, you dont have to train much to get results when your younger either. i think kids should start lifting weights at age 13. there workout should simply be, find the biggest guy, load and unload his weight.

I think the difference only becomes a lot more noticeable as one gets past middle-age. I mean, hell, a lot of powerlifters are in their 30's, 40's. I'd think that the difference between 18 years old and 35 years old is much much less than between 35 and 50. Just my guess though.

Younger means less muscle in most cases. Less muscle...less that needs to recover...

As you get bigger..you need more food and more rest.

Sounds like a good reason to get bigger to me (as I eat one meal and am cooking another...)

I think young lifters are much more prone to over training than older lifters. They are less experienced, tend to be less educated, and usually aren't tuned in to their own bodies for feedback. Older guys have gone through the arc of learning about over training. They have a much better guage of how much is too much... and how much is just right for them.

Experience counts for a lot.

Me and overtraining were married for quite a while., but I divorced her and have been happy ever since. Oh, she comes back once in a while beggin` but I slam the door in her face.

younger lifters are often too enthusiastic and uneducated like SG said...the combo of those two lead to overtraining

All other things being held equal (knowledge, knowing your own body etc.), the younger body is going to be less prone to overtraining, imo.

Would you say its alot harder for a younger lifter to overtrain?

It's a highly individual thing. All things being equal, exercise tolerance increases over time. Beginning lifters tend to be gung ho with emotion without intelligent directing of that emotion. Usually beginners not eating right is the main thing. Learning through trial and error over time and by applying a lit match to most of the popular muscle magazines is how a lot of whom are not naturally gifted progress. Most Olympic competitors train with levels of volume and frequency that dwarfs the majority of even us more serious gym rats. But they had to work up to those levels -- over time through intelligently applied training methods and planning.

That seems to be my experience. I'm 44 and I can handle far more volume now without overtraining than I could have at 25.
