it becomes a habit. My girl will sometimes try to use pet names in public and I want to smack her.

You do it enough on a daily basis and it comes out in public situations. Many people aren't conscious of this.

Different situation, act accordingly.

that too (although i THINK nana might be the word that some countries use instead of grandmother. i don't know though. I know in german it's Oma).

and when kids can't pronounce someone's name so they call them 'lala', so then everyone calls them lala.

Or when people talk to their kids or other peoples kids for that matter like they are dogs. I hate the tone people use when talking to little kids. I mean softening the voice is perfectly fine. However I dont think your mom should sound like a cartoon when talking to you when your little haha!

I was at my neighbor's before and I said I had to go home to feed my horse. This woman that i've seen before said she wanted to go with me to see my horse.
