Those far cry commercials and trailers......were those pc graphics or console?? I'm "assuming" it's the pc version.....but I'd love to know if there's any comparison shots out there of what it looks like on high with a pc vs. what it's going to look like on the consoles. Whatever they are, those shos I'm seeing on xplay are the best graphics I've ever seen in a videogame hands down......ridiculous!!!

If you consider PS-III or X-box a console that will have a higher resolution, higher refresh rate and greater pixel count than a pc can at 1/3rd the cost.

This is the only game I care to get this holiday season. Tracking down actual pc/console comparisons is tough but you can go to sites and just manually compare each.

Actually though it looks like they just use the same pics for each version. They seem to be pushing the console versions more (understandable...$$)

The designer had this to say.

Far Cry 2 designer, Peter Redding has refuted the notion that the PC version will be better than either the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 editions.

Whilst running through the PC demonstration at Play.com Live he said:

We’re not changing any aspect of the game, all the same content will be in console versions that you’ve seen here; all the same systems and all the same mechanics.

He added:

The expectation is that for someone playing on a really good high-end PC, it is going to be amazing. But the console version is going to be fantastic.

First review sounds promising-

PCGamer voted Far cry 2 a "Wild" 94% quoting its pros were Beautiful, Free roaming and Utterly Absorbing, and its cons were, its not a linear shooter, its not a prescribed story and its not going to let you go !

The basis of Far Cry 2's story telling: Characters and situations are swapped via a software author, its responding to choices made by you the player. Its something that's been on the cards for some time - mostly in research projects - but this is the first high-profile game to use it.
Its nothing less than a revelation. What makes this procedural storytelling cool isn't that you get to play the game lots of times, and see new things happen, or do things in new ways, Its not even that it gives you stories to share, situations to compare with your friends. Its that the game just works and responds to your successes, failures and fuckups.
If you don't like what a guy is asking you to do, then don't do it... If you really like one of your buddies, you stick with him. When the situations force choices on you... By God, its incredible

I'm getting it for PC of course, and expect it to be less demanding than Crysis: Warhead. If you can get solid frames in that on medium (mainstream) you should be able to get optimal performance in Far Cry 2 on high at least, maybe even bump it up to very high. I've read it takes advantage of quad cores, something like 30% better performance over dual cores.

you do know that even a middle of the road pc will dominate either console, right? And a high end one will blow them out of the water.

what's odd is that it looks an order of magnitude better than crysis....:whatever:

anyway......that trailer looked amazing, but I can't imagine that there's not going to be "high" settings for the pc version that will turn everything on and make it look ridiculous. The 360 and ps3 are not good on the AA and AF, so even medium settings on a pc should elevate the graphics beyond the consoles. And that's scary seeing how good those console shots just looked.

They built the Dunia engine from the ground up mostly, something like only 3% of the original Far Cry engine was used. The fact that it's running simultaneously on each system, and in some cases looks better than Crysis is testament to the power of efficient coding.
And yeah, even medium settings on PC will equal or surpass consoles. I say low settings will be roughly comparable to the console versions.
Anyone who has a PC with at least an 8600GT or ATI X1800XL Pro would be foolish to get it for a console, especially considering the limited edition PC version still only costs $50 with a preorder.

No i thought vice versa well I guess is you compare a $3,500 pc to a console but how many are going to shell out that? I quite playing video games when my 4yo jumped up and down on my new PS-2 like 2 months after they came out! Damn!!!

A $3,500 PC won't run Crysis much better than one a fraction of the price. A sub-$1000 PC can run Crysis Warhead maxed out. Anything after that and the cost far outweighs any performance gains you'll get with the current technology.

I'm not sold on crysis running on high with a sub 1k pc.....I have to see it to beleive it. I mean it was pretty much a proven fact that the 8800's even in SLI couldn't "max" crysis out. I thought I read even the 9800's couldn't do it unless you doubled or even tripled them. Now by running I mean more than 30 FPS "consistently". Some of those setups could run crysis most of the game over 30fps until you had to fight more than a couple enemies at once. I saw real bad slowdown even with some pretty serious firepower under the hood. Can the new 280's even run crysis "all out"??

The price of those rigs are $6097, $5869, and $8160; green, blue, and red.

They don't make PC's that can max Crysis out (4x AA, very high) yet with a consistent frame rate. Even the above most likely dipped well below 30 fps in a couple of the more intense levels. Most people are happy they can run it at all lol. Like the developer said, the game will still feel new a few years from now, when more people do have a pc that can run it all out.

OMFG!! dude, check out the stats on this collossus rig...........Vigor Gaming Computer: The Gaming PC with Extreme Vigor™

that's obscene that even this setup can't pound crysis in the ass.

Yeah it's all in the code. I bet Far Cry 2 will run twice as good as Crysis, and look better while it's doing so.

did they code crysis in a week or something? I mean why in god's name does that game tap out 6k rigs? did you catch the dual core two processors on the collosus? Fucking sick. And yeah, I don't think I've ever seen better graphics than far cry.....and it's a completely open free roaming environment, I'm stunned by the specs on that game.

So what online store would you put a rig together from? Would you tailor one from a site like the link I posted above, or would you just straight buy the parts and put it together yourself? Just from an eyeball of the components, it looks like a wash pricewise when I "customized" a rig at that vigor site as compared to the last time I checked tigerdirect or newegg.

Yeah Crytek isn't known for putting much effort into optimization; they just make their game look pretty and able to run on their test rig most likely. Only after many people complaining did they make Warhead slightly more optimized.

The fact that Far Cry 2 looks better and is running on consoles (albeit with less detail/effects) makes me think that Crysis could also generally be done on consoles and be perfectly playable if optimized from the ground up.

I've looked at tigerdirect but I still prefer newegg. Excellent customer service to in my experience and many others'. More geeks seem to prefer newegg as well.

If I were you and you don't mind an AMD based gpu, get a full tower with mb, cpu, ect of choice and throw in the 4870X2 card, and depending on how much you want to spend, DDR3 memory since that will be the standard in a couple years anyway. Of course make sure you match that choice with the right mb.

I myself am not all that hardcore about upgrading all the time with the latest stuff. I basically will build a good PC with a newer model mb that will last me around 4 yrs and then upgrade cpu/gpu about midway. Usually have better deals at that point anyways based on that tech because newer stuff quickly replaces it.

This is one advantage consoles have over PC's...they milk the existing tech for a good 5 or so years (hell the PS2 is still going 8 yrs later). PC shooters and strategy games kick ass when you have the rig for them, but a highly optimized console game can be gaming euphoria. I've played through MGS 4 three times and it's still far from getting old. Epic said they're not making Gears of War 2 for PC, "ever." That's alright, I prefer the PS3 for console gaming anyways. It would be a shame for Microsoft to brush aside the PC gaming segment any further than they already have.

Not talking shit, what is your build? I am assuming it is a personally built pc not one of the off the shelf jobs. I build my own also that is why I am asking. I never put the side on the computer because it never stays on for long always messing with it.

It's the first PC I built from newegg, almost a year ago-

Picture_023b.jpg

Cooler Master Criterion case
Intel Badaxe 2 motherboard
500 watt Aerocool PSU
2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
Arctic Cool CPU cooler
2 gigs DDR2 800
Radeon 3870 HD (512MB)
250 gig Seagate Barricuda 7200 for programs, 500 gig for storage
Samsung DVD drive

I originally had an 8600 GT and the stock CPU cooler before upgrading to the above more recently. Also threw in an extra HDD for storage and a PCI slot cooler with adjustable exhaust fan for good measure. Even after the upgrades I kept it under a grand as it is currently.

I think I'll get some more RAM since supposedly 32 bit XP with Service Pack 3 can utilize 4 gigs now.
Gonna play Far Cry 2 with 2 gigs and see how it compares to using 4 later. I'll probably upgrade to a quad too once I get Adobe Premiere Pro and start actually doing some work with it lol.

Should run great considering this is Warhead on very high-

YouTube - Crysis: Warhead propaganda mission

I'm definitely getting a full tower for my next system though. The latest gpu cards won't fit in anything else. Hell the 3870 was a tight fit in my mid tower.

hansel, what's a good place to actually "look" at cases?? If you go to newegg or TD, you can see the make of the case, but not what it looks like. I want to get a full tower, but I want something cool looking. I might try to see if I can find an alienware case on ebay.....those are my favorite.

Newegg has a few pictures of pretty much every case-
