From a Doc's perspective, is there anything wrong with keeping your heart rate over 170bpm for 30+ minutes? Keep in mind I'm not talking your average person but someone who maintains a healthy lifestyle and is not overweight.

It wasn't for me but one of my buddies who is in decent shape just started working out and he said his heart rate was over 175 for prolly 50 minutes and he thought his heart was going to explode out of his chest.

the older you are the lower your max heart rate becomes. for a 60 year old if they have a 170 heart rate they would kill themselves. but for a 30 year old its fine. my heart rate gets up to 185 when i do a 400M sprint and i'm in my early 30's.

if your friend is in their 20's then 170 is not a problem at all. they are at about 80% of their maximum

if they can keep that up for 30 minutes then i give them credit cause that isn't easy.

i think when i used to run half marathons my heart rate was in the 140's pacing 9 minutes

Heart rate really means nothing, it's when you start throwing pvc's or or have ST changes but there's no magical hr at which this happens. I know that doesn't help you but it is what it is.

My heart rate runs high when I do cardio (165-180 easy), but I have a low resting rate (49-52) and normal blood pressure (115/70 usually). I think everyone is just different. He's probably fine, but if he's worried he should go see a doctor.

I run for about 35-40 minutes and my HR is 180 at the end, sweating like stuck pig and pretty wore out

for those of you who work out for extended periods at 180bpm, how does it feel to burn away all your muscle?
