WTF Honda?!?!

she's had this Civic for 2.5 years. it's a 96. car had about 56K miles on it when she got it and now has almost 90K (not bad of miles for an almost 9 year old car).

it now has it's 2nd exhaust problem.

first time the pipe going into the muffler rusted out at the muffler. had to replace the entire muffler. Flowmaster instead of OEM. half the price, just as quiet.

now this time.....the car has developed a bad exhaust leak recently but we've been too busy for me to even take a look at the source, although i could hear it was coming from just behind the engine. finally got a chance to get under it this morning. havn't removed the heat sheilds yet because the bolts are rusted to shit, but the pipe just aft of the cat has rusted out.

Hondas aren't supposed to do this shit. needless to say, i'm not happy and i'm trying to figure out if i want to do this repair or if i want to pass it on to someone else. i hate dealing with rusty bolts and i've got 100 other things to do. her car sounds like total shit though and has practially no power because of this leak.

fuckin crap. i hate this shit.

She doesnt get a rust treatment every year ?

Probably time to change the whole exhaust line for something worth your money.

Has the car been driven through standing water, repeatedly?

FUCK HONDA!

the pipe i need is a dealer only item. son of a fuckin bitch. this means the car has to go into the shop or i gotta get the pipe from the honda dealer. nearest honda dealer is almost an hour away. fuckin rat bastards. most dealershits don't want to give you the parts either. now a simple $20 piece of pipe has just turned into a $100 repair.

Manny - we've never done rust treatments on any of our cars. hers, even for it's age, is practially rust free. the only thing that seems to rust on her car is the f'ing exhaust. i won't bother changing out the entire exhaust for something better. it's not worth it at all. she wants the car to be quiet, and in turn, i must keep it quiet for her. it's an automatic too ( ) so even trying to eek some power out of it is pointless. plus it's the DX model, so it's SOHC non-VTec. trying to squeeze power out of that car would be like polishing a turd. sure, you can make that turd shine, but in the end, you still have a turd.

StringBean - it's on par for ricer sound :lmao: i had to drive it last weekend. we went past the pool hall across from where we used to live and there were about 10 people standing out front (all young guys). i slipped it into Neutral and tapped the gas twice for them to hear. i'm sure they were wondering where we "got the exhaust." :lmao:

Mr. db - to be quite honest with you, i don't want to know what she's done with that car. i find it very strange that the pipe rusted out where it appears to have though. there is clearance between the heat sheilds and the pipe, so it's not like water could get trapped in there. even if it did, i would've expected the bottom of the pipe to rust, not the top.

I'm sure a cheap generic muffler shop can deal with this problem, without having to use $$$Honda$$$parts$$$. Do you have "Three Star Muffler" shops in your area?

no, we have a Monroe muffler shop, but they always want a crapload.

when we got the muffler put on, the brackets had to be cut off the stock one and welded onto the new muffler. i found a "backwoods" shop that cut and bent new pipe, then cut and welded the brackets, did the entire install for $50.

this piece, however, has 2 triangle looking pieces on either end, one to bolt to the cat, the other to bolt to the pipe that runs the length of the car (and has the resonator in it). pipe also has a bend in it so it can come down from the cat (Cat is bolted to the manifold in the front of the engine).

without removing the pipe myself, i don't know if the brackets that bolt to the next pipe are an actual part of the pipe itself or if they can be removed (can probably be removed).

well, i guess it's time to go aftermarket.

she took it into the shop today to get a free estimate. we figured $25 part, hour labor, in and out in $100 + tax.

they come back and say the pipe and the resonator pipe are sold together for a whopping $167! she told the guy in the shop as well as the honda dealer that the resonator pipe is fine, it's just the pipe between the cat and resonator. they said it doesn't matter, it's sold as one complete package.

this is fuckin great. i might be able to pick up a cat-back exhaust cheaper, only problem is i don't want to use a high flow system on her car (or mine).

shops are funny when they deal with her though. they try to get her to get the work done on the spot. she always refuses and says she needs to talk to me first. they hate that with a passion. guy at the shop today said "but it's your car, why is it his business?" i wish she'd just tell these guys to fuck off, it's none of their business why she's not getting the work done on the spot. instead she usually tells them she has to consult with me. then they try this "well, this is what needs to be done so what is he going to do that we can't?" that's when she isn't as nice to them anymore.

a big ol "fuck off" would suffice from her though. that'd be cool.

Get some jobber crap, treat the exhaust for rust. It's basically a smelly oil which is sold at most carshops.

I agree with you, I wouldnt picture myself installing a Remus or Borla exhaust on some beaten Civic...

Just go back to the "back-woods" shop man. They will be able to figure it out and fix it. I remember when the exhaust went on my first car, and '81 Buick Electra Limited. The cat was shot, as was the muffler and the pipe. The local pipe bender redid my whole exhaust for about 42 bucks. I got a new muffler, new pipe and he just rammed the pipe through the old cat so I didn't have to get a new one, but it still looked like I had one. No emissions tests here, but you have to have a cat on your car. It was a sweet deal.

seen the new truck they're bringing out? It's actually pretty decent looking

what's the problem now deteras? can't comprehend what i posted so you've got to spout off at the mouth like a baby again? don't worry, once you finally get your G.E.D. you might be able to understand what half the people here are posting. it's a very slim chance, but it's quite possible that some day you might be intelligent enough to comprehend concepts that involve more than yourself and a mirror.

here, let me break it down more simply for you Deteras1 - you are nowhere near intelligent enough to engage in a battle of wits with anyone on this board, and that includes Tiger88.

never heard of the stuff. link to product? do i have to PM you for a source? ;)

i'm finding some cat-back exhaust systems on ebay for under $200. stainless steel too, so the rust issue will be no more. one i'm looking at now is slightly used, $100 + $50 shipping. it comes with a CF muffler, but i want to use the Flowmaster. guess i could snag that exhaust, bolt it up, run it to the backwoods shop and have them cut/weld/clamp the Flowmaster to the stainless catback system. that'll probably cost me about $50.

still, i'll only pay about $200 and she'll have a stainless steel system, so no more rust issues. it'll cost a bit more than me buying the OEM parts and doing the work myself, but they'll just rust out again. This car isn't even broken in yet (89K miles), it's got a long ways to go so if i can nip this rusting exhaust problem in the bud now, she'll be set for the life of the car.
