WTF Fishoils Omega-3 harmful ???

junk

New member
I'm taking about 20 softgels a day of Fish Oils (Omega 3) during the cycle for an endless list of benefits I thought Fish Oils were having for guys like us and the general population. Sometimes I would take even 30 grams of Fish Oils a day (combined with about 5 grams of Omega-6 borage oil)

Now I read this extract:
The most commonly reported side effects of fish oil supplements include fishy odor on the breath, upset stomach and greasy stools. A more serious side effect can be an increase in LDL cholesterol, a harmful form of cholesterol. Large doses of fish oil supplements may also cause weight gain and decrease the absorption of vitamins A, E, D, and K from the stomach. If you have diabetes, use caution when taking fish oil supplements, they are reported to increase blood sugar.

Taking large amounts of fish oils over a long period of time may increase the risk of mild bleeding resulting in nosebleeds and bruising.

It's not a good idea to use cod liver oil as a fish oil supplement because it contains very high levels of vitamin A. High doses of vitamin A can cause headache, dry skin, itching, and liver damage.

where did you pull this load of garbage from??? another note, they dont define what LAGE DOSE OF FISH OIL means....100, 200, 5000g????

realisticly, your total fat consumption shuld not be above 20% of total caloric intake, so 30g of fish oils assuming you dont gourge on fatty foods, is probably very healthy and helpfull for you

That is a bunch of shit. It is proven time and time again that fish oils and the omega's do the body good! Not good, GREAT!

Increases in fat intake could lead to increases in LDL, especially if you're taking in alot of extra fat. And I'm not sure whether or not it hinders absorption of those other things...but it could.

That article is horse shit, obviously totally ignoring the benefits of PUFA's and the fact Americans are grossly under-nourished in this area, and overplaying any potential issues.

Bad quality fish oils can cause some issues- gastric upset mainly. They low quality sources may also contain contaminants since they are not as highly filtered. It is true fish oils do thin the blood, this is usually a good thing.

20 softgels?? That's a shitload! What makes you think that much is going to be beneficial? There is probably a dose response relationship just like everything else and after certain point your body will exvrete excess as waste. Just curious as to how you came up with that number?

if each softgel is only 1g, as they tend to be, then its only 20g of extra fat................HARDLY A SHITLOAD

The study is most likely legit, but the doses are probably much higher than any of us are likely to try. Most of these studies that claim something is dangerous use insane amounts of the substance that not even an idiot would attempt. Who cares if aspartame causes cancer in rats if you have to eat 10% of your bodyweight per day of it? I'm not a rat and I don't plan on eating near that much. I have no doubt that extremely large doses of anything can become dangerous, it's the too much of a good thing theory.

Keep taking your fish oils and be happy that someone else is getting that 20g in trans-fatty acids.

try using the liquid fish oil in your shakes or on salad or something for the extra benefit of omega 3's. it also has more fat content than the softgels so its ideal for ones diet in the way that it would be alot cheaper than eating 30 softgels per day.

There's nothing in that report that isn't true.

However, the LDL cholesterol is only in a small segment of the population that is sensitive to dietary fats in this way.

Take your vitamins at a different time and there won't be any absorption problems.

Cod liver oil sucks ass for the above-mentioned reasons. Fish oils should be taken from the body and skin, not the liver or head (pollution and pituitary respectively). This is a reason why most caps are suspect -- they generally don't state where the oils source is from. Here's what I use: http://store.yahoo.com/iherb/um3fishoillem.html

Upset stomach -- who cares?

Weight gain -- what kind of weight? Probably good weight since you're feeding your body something it is starved for.

Diabetics -- don't know about that. But I'm sure it would be offset by the myriad of health benefits omega-3s offer.
