What do you find helpful? I know stopping for a while and coming back refreshed always helps, but then again substances work quicker. Maybe Piracetam or other nootropics?

I always took a cold shower followed by a warm cup of green tea.

Or I just took the rest of the day off.

Depends on what I'm writing

If it's poetry, I need to envelope myself in the feelings that I am trying to capture (pain, heartbreak, pleasure, etc...) it can be a toll on my emotions sometimes.

If it's a story or an essay, lots of coffee. Makes me feel all jittery, like a literary madman. My mind just furiously working away at a pace that I can barely keep up with (on the kayboard or pen).

I like "recreational" substances for the thinking of the content part (creativity), but I can't write effectively under the influence.

I always motivated myself by putting my nuts in a vice... 'You write that book, bitch, or I will crush your nuts'

There are no new stories, but myriad ways to make old ones fresh. Take an old story and turn it upside down, and turn it inside out. A fresh eye.
For example, why did the Lone Ranger use silver bullets? How about a story about the Lone Ranger as an western werewolf hunter?
You can do it with any genre.

It's remarkable how many spins can be done on a story with a little research. My son was writing a werewolf story a couple of nights ago, so we did a web search on the history of werewolves. Lots of little known stuff that's rife for a horror writer to use.

First comes alienation and contemplation, then comes re-emergence and materialization :o

Nootropics for creativity - verdict: no! (if you need to solve a math problem: yess)
Mind altering, mood inducing substances - verdict: yes!

One time I had a 20 pg creative story due... so I took 5 hits of cid... of course I did not realize it would be so hard to type while the letters kept falling off the computer screen...

This is how bad movies get made... not because o the story or the idea per se, but more because of the execution of the filmakers...

LOL

Pick up a copy of "Becoming a Writer" by Dorothea Brande. That helps immensely. As well, find the source for your inspiration. For me, it's certain music that creates imagery, and I go with it. After a bit of that, it's a creative avalanche.

Free writing and/or writing exercises

I used to find poetry and figure out what it meant to me and write about an experience that supports the meaning of the poem.

What are you writing?

It's also how great movies get made...witness "Jaws". A simplistic story told extremely well. (Execution was perfect, probably more by accident than design. The mechanical problems with the shark limited it's screen time, so when the shark finally did show up the audience asscociated the ocean itself with fear.)
When was the last time you saw a genuinely NEW story? Bet if you think you've found one I can find it's literary parents.

LOL. Mostly short stories, musings, etc. This salvia stuff is an entheogen that's still legal, look at this

I'm going to try it out. Not big into hallucinogens, but its effects vary greatly it seems from person to person.

Yeah I heard of that stuff recently... interesting accounts I agree...

any stories you would care to post? You post up some pretty decent gibberish around here now and then (not being mean- I am a big fan of the non-sensical)

I used to be pretty creative myself - but then I came down with a chronic case of the realities...

salvia - I usually stay away from herbs/shrooms due to purity issues and dosage disparities. hallucinogens over all are not to my liking, that is simply not something I am looking in a substance, but occasionally I give a go. For creative purposes though I suppose it might be conducive - if you try it, post up your feedback - me and a few of my buds exchange our trip-experiences - gives something to talk about :o

But to the issue of herbs: until recently, until FDA nailed it of course, there was this excellent source in Peru selling mate coca tea (cocaine plant leaves) with cat's claw and maca - produced a mild-wild effect.....in the pants though, but damn that was awesome inducing pro-sexual/sensual mood, although it cost $120 for like 10 baggies :(

westsnoop- I would come up with something for you , but it looks like sorearms already did.... I am sure you are right though...

juve- I assume you are implying that you stick to synthetics- which can have the same issues- unless you make them yourself of course...

I may, at some point, post some tomfool musings; such as why the English language needs more semicolons; they are quite under-utilized.
