I'm rather leery about an object coming that close to the Earth and not being drawn into the Earths Gravitational field so that it is drawn in on a collision course.

Not with the current rocket propelled missals used. In fact, if they were going to "blow it up" it would have to be done fairly far away from Earth (i.e. they would need the Saturn Rockets used from the 1970's)
