would you ever give up size for sports?

I gave up some size for running, then put it back on, then gave some up again to be more agile at volleyball, but not as much as I had to drop for distance running.

bro i work in swelteringg hot desert, lugging around a heavy ass pack and chainsaw, completely decked out in full body nomex suits
and i've retained the same body weight thru consistent eating, drinking and training
you can do it

I had to gain size for sports (rugby as a forward), so never experienced that problem :D Though as others said, short of entering a specific body weight for a martial or or w/e no reason why you can't retain most of your muscle while getting leaner for your sport.

so this fall i'm joining the club ultimate team, and unlike pickup games, i'll be pretty much sprinting repeatedly for hours at a time. Speed and stamina is a huge part of the game, and every really good player is pretty damn skinny. I'm not even big but i'm easily the most built person on the team, and i feel like carrying the extra weight around will be detrimental. I don't wanna be super skinny again like when i played soccer, but i don't want to constantly be gassed either. do you think there's a way to keep size but still excel at sports with lots of running? or am i going to have to choose? i know i went a bunch of different directions with this thread, so i would appreciate anyone's thoughts

Most team sports position to position favor a particular body type, even individual sports like tennis or swimming have an ideal size and shape. I think to be the best you can be at a sport you need to try to relate your body and training to fit your sport or particular position. I guess it all depends on how well you wish to perform at your sport. If its just recreational I dont think I would lose muscle to be better than a bunch skinny guys playing soccer, but it depends on the individual and your particular goals. I guess what Im trying to say is that a 120 lbs guy will run circles around your ass on a soccer field from a stamina standpoint, but that same 120 lbs guy wouldnt stand a chance against a 215 lbs running back coming out of the back field at full speed. Specific sport specific body required.
