would you ever give up size for sports?

so this fall i'm joining the club ultimate team, and unlike pickup games, i'll be pretty much sprinting repeatedly for hours at a time. Speed and stamina is a huge part of the game, and every really good player is pretty damn skinny. I'm not even big but i'm easily the most built person on the team, and i feel like carrying the extra weight around will be detrimental. I don't wanna be super skinny again like when i played soccer, but i don't want to constantly be gassed either. do you think there's a way to keep size but still excel at sports with lots of running? or am i going to have to choose? i know i went a bunch of different directions with this thread, so i would appreciate anyone's thoughts

You don't have to be skinny, just lose excess BF and retain as much muscle as possible.

thanks,i'll hit you guys when i get back to my other comp with a working k button. do y'all have any recommendations for modifying my diet to help me keep muscle. like maybe lots of carbs before, gatorade during? i'm kinda clueless when it comes to adapting diet to intense cardio

Well, if you only are worrying about retaining muscle/strength I would take a look at how much and where you are getting protein.
You don't need to over do it with the carbs, no need to get too many simple sugars like that from gatorade in my opinion as well.
i'm sure you can figure out the amount of carbs and what kind works best for you. I eat oatmeal everyday, great low glycemic carb that keeps me going. Lastly I would introduce alot of essential fats into your diet as they are needed to help make your muscles grow, or atleast fro you retain what you have. Without the use of anabolics I would suspect you will lose atleast a little bit musclemass, but you could probably keep alot and look way better than you do now.

up your cals .. losing weight is buring more cals then u consume .. up the protein .. protein is the key to muscle growth/retain

Get a parachute and start running sprints with it until you feel like you're going to die, then run a few more. Basically start training like a 200m/400m track athlete would. Those guys have a good bit of muscle, yet the 400m is a man's race that requires the most brutal combination of speed and stamina. Nothing makes me feel better than this type of training.

Simplify weight training to core lifts and some explosive lifts like cleans.

I'd agree with the diet advice given above. It's ok to have some simple carbs and a big dose of whey following your weight training, also, a few gulps of gatorade and a shot of whey following the run training, but other than that, cut out the sugars and focus on good carbs, good fats, and plenty of protein throughout the day.

Don't forget that trying to run like a skinny guy with an extra 10, 20 or 30 pounds of muscle really beats-up your body.

I can play basketball reasonably well at 230 lbs. My elevation is decent and I move fairly well. But at 260, I have the same elevation and quickness but it feels like someone beat the hell out of me with a tire iron the next day.

Extra pounds do a number on your joints and ligaments when you try to play a lighter guy's game. Don't forget that!
