Has anyone ever been to one of these, or the Challenges or Qualifiers? I'm dieing to see one....

There's a Challenge in Norfolk Virgina on the 28th, anyone going to that? Magnus will be there!!!!!

I know alot of guys on here do powerlifting, but does anyone compete in any of these type events?

Here...lots of different training. A lot more than I imagined. Hard to work a job and train for this stuff. I do lots of work in the gym along with other exercises such as:

truck push
truck pull
sled drag
farmer's walk
crucifix hold
2" bar work
tire flip
atlas stones
lots of wind sprints
tons of grip work

It is hard to be big, strong, and in good athletic shape. It is also hard to train for all of these events out of your garage too.

B fold...thanks for replying!!! I love to watch those events!!! Are you competing in any upcomming ones? Do your neighbors think your nuts when your training at home? Would you like to be my neighbor? ;)

I am competing in June of this year. Yeah...my neighbors like to sit outside on their porch and watch me flip my 700+lb tire down the driveway. I drag my sled through my yard and theirs, and do my farmer's walks around their house too. They don't mind. The events are really fun...but it requires a whole new aspect of lifting and being in shape. It is different to lift for a purpose and exercise specific. It is like manual labor...and who can complete the job the fastest.

Thats awesome! I'd really like to catch your competition if its not too far away. That is if you don't mind, you can e mail me the dates and location. If not thats cool. I'd just really like to see one and be neat to see someone I can "chat" with be a competitor.

You have mail. I don't expect to do well in the competition. A couple of things that have me at a disadvantage is that:

1-I don't have a lot of equipment to train with.

2-I weigh about 285-290 right now and will be in the 275-300lb weight class. There will be some big boys there that will probably be considerably stronger than I.

3-It will be my first strongman competition.

I just expect to work hard between now and then and finish every event respectfully.

B True...if you don't mind hit me with the info for your comp. I have a meet in May, but I have always been interested in strongmen events.

I'm lifting in the 198's, but at 6'3" that's way to light. I could easily carry 275-300 if I decided to.

By the way let me know where you found the "big" tire. I've wanted to get one to add to my GPP(General Physical Preparedness) work...Thanks.

I've just started to train for strongman competitions. The guys in my gym an I are looking for some variety. We have been slowly accumulating various equipment. One of the guys is good friends with Whit Baskins. In fact, we are going down there today to get some atlas stones.
You'd be suprised how much of the stuff you can just make if you know a good welder.
We plan to stick to the state and area competitions for now. If I can help ya in any way, just ask.

Hey Zombie...there are much cheaper places to get the Atlas stones. If you don't mind the drive...and I am assuming that you don't, then they are pretty cheap. Drop me an email man...and hope to hear from you soon.

There are several links from deepsquatter.com and try dinosaurtraining.com too. Both are good reads. I read a lot on other strength boards and grip boards too.

aww thanks b ;)Good woman are hard to find (so my guy friends whine about all the time) so treat her good, as I'm sure you will.

b fold the truth, which contest are you competing in? You bumping shoulders with the likes of Phil Pfister and Brian Schoonveld?

Good luck.

Nope...not anywhere near Phil or Schooney, or Chad Coy or Bryan Neese or anyone of that nature. Just an amat. contest in the South.

Not expecting a lot...just to give it all I have.

B True

B fold ...give it all you got...boy you got alot to give. You'll kick some serious tooshie! I wish I could watch you throw those tractor tires around in your next competition :(

Thanks Ms. Shagwell.
I really enjoy the little flirts back and forth...or maybe I am just flirting :)

After a day like I have had today...your kind words really help!

Thanks again

this might be off the topic but i once saw Bill Kazmier in a mall in wisconsin (about 2 years ago i think)
BIGGEST human being i have ever seen in my life! he was surprsingly ripped unlike his tv appearances, the man is truly a mountain

Just in case anyone was wondering...I did get 2nd place in my contest. I came in at 284lbs and the guy that won weighed about 335lbs. Not too bad considering I had never done the events.

Events were

Incline Log Press for 1rm
1220lb truck deadlift and hold for time
crucifix hold, 31lbs each for time
carry (220 x 2) and drag (500lbs) for 60 feet each for best time
atlas stones (210-330lbs)

Had a great time and very very sore from last weekend.

Thanks Ms. Shagwell...

Congrats on the 2nd place B True. Not bad considering you were new to the events. Next time you'll have a bit of the experience factor on your side. Once again I congratulate you on a job well done.

Strength and Honor...

Thanks man...much appreciated. Took me till today, from Saturday, to get rid of the soreness. Took lots of pics from the comp. Had a great time.

Thanks again

Hey guys,
I have always entered in powerlifting meets, but never placed higher than 4th. I am 23 and 6'4" 278lbs at 11%BF. I have always been strong as hell around the farm with round bales of hay, railroad ties, logging pulpwood from the woods, even tossing 100lbs sacks of feed like they are nothing, and pulling my homemade sled with sacks of concrete on it. This type of strength has always come natural to me. I just think I would do better in some type of contest that matches brute strength, rather than fixed position lifts. I am just wondering what the average size of a strongman would be, and what their feats of strength are in PL lifts? Thanks guys. Tripp OUT.................:mix:

As a "veteran"<j/k>of two competitions,I can tell you a few things...and please, powerlifters, don't be offended by this, but a lot of guys, when they get into the strongman thing, are taken aback by the cardio component of the competition. From what I gather, this is a major bone of contention among strongmen.Myself,I enjoyed the events that required strength and speed, like the farmer's walk.In that respect,it's difficult to translate to powerlifting lifts.I would venture to say that most strongmen would be competitive with equally well trained powerlifters. In the two competitions I entered, the contestants were divided into weight classes,so there wasn't as much disparity, although most of the guys were still >250 pounds.

w8liftinglady...I agree with you. I did very well in my strength in my contest...but needed more cardio fitness. I've been hitting the sled, stones, and lots of static holds and high rep squats lately. I hate them all...ha ha. Gonna get ready for a big contest in October now!!!!! Gotta be in top shape.

Tripp...if you are looking for any help...feel free to email me at [email protected]
