Workout frequency???

I've started seriously lifting about a year ago to try to improve my strength. Some of my workouts leave me sore for a week. How do you know when to lift again? I've heard work a body part then rest that part for three days, but my muscles are still sore after the third day! If I've rested the body part for three days, and wake up sore, should I suck it up and head to the gym again?

Any feedback from someone who's been there would be appreciated.....

Don't judge by soreness. That's not always key in telling you whether or not you worked hard enough. I believe it was called DOMs (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and once your body adapts, you won't really be sore anymore post-workout.

I workout each body part (with the exception of calves and abs) once a week. If you pound your body parts hard enough with heavy compound movements, this is more than enough. Just do as B Fold does...
